Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will serve as the interim head coach after the team fired head coach Gary Kubiak Friday, Dec. 6. The Texans have set an NFL record with seven straight losses by seven points or less. Kubiak had a 61-64 record in eight seasons with the club.

Updating a previous report, the Houston Texans are saying that head coach Gary Kubiak did not suffer a heart attack at halftime of the Week 9 game against the Indianapolis Colts. They have not confirmed what caused him to collapse, but they have ruled out a heart attack. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips took over as head coach for the remainder of the game.

Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has taken over the head coaching duties for the rest of the Week 9 game against the Indianapolis Colts after head coach Gary Kubiak collapsed at halftime, and was taken to the hospital. Phillips said Sunday, Nov. 3, that Kubiak was taken to the hospital as a "precaution," and that the crazy schedule of an NFL coach, staying up late nights and lack of sleep "caught up to him."

Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said he is concerned about Ed Reed's (hip) recent hip surgery. "Anytime a guy's operated on, you're concerned, especially at this time of year," Phillips said. "If it'd have been right after the season, it'd have been different. So there's a little concern, but the good thing about (Reed), he's experienced it before. He's an experienced guy. You have no problem with him studying or knowing what you're doing. He's going to spend all the time it takes off the field to get ready. So I think Ed'll be ready when it's time."

Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips expects even bigger things from his unit in 2012 - even after DL Mario Williams signed with the Buffalo Bills. Phillips believes players like LB Brooks Reed and DL J.J. Watt will be better with a year of experience in his system, and the Texans reloaded the defense by drafting LB Whitney Mercilus and DL Jared Crick. "They're all really good players," Phillips said. "We can be awfully strong."
