The Houston Texans have agreed to an undisclosed five-year deal with new head coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien was an assistant for the New England Patriots from 2007 to 2011 and was the offensive coordinator for the team when they lost to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. It's unknown if interim head coach Wade Phillips will be retained by O'Brien.

The Texans are also interested in former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith, Stanford head coach David Shaw and interim head coach Wade Phillips, among others. Whisenhunt and general manager Rick Smith worked together for a year on the league's competition committee and got to know each other well. Owner Bob McNair prefers to hire someone with previous head coaching experience.

"Anytime a guy's operated on, you're concerned, especially at this time of year," Phillips said. "If it'd have been right after the season, it'd have been different. So there's a little concern, but the good thing about (Reed), he's experienced it before. He's an experienced guy. You have no problem with him studying or knowing what you're doing. He's going to spend all the time it takes off the field to get ready. So I think Ed'll be ready when it's time."

"I've got a good record. I think I should be considered. I guess people may have taken it the wrong way that I ought to be a head coach. I don't believe that. I think I should be considered. If you look at my record, and you can look at all the people they're talking about now, and my record is better than most everyone they're talking about, as a head coach."

Williams will continue to play with his hand on the ground as a defensive end. "I think Mario fits in well with what we're going to do," Phillips said. "He's a five-technique, an outside rush guy. That's what he is. I don't see any difference for him. He's going to be outside all the time." The philosophy of Phillips' 3-4, which he says is closer to a 4-3 than a traditional 3-4 because the linemen have to control one gap rather than two, is to get up the field when the ball is snapped and pressure the quarterback.

Updating a previous report, the Dallas Cowboys used five officials during practice Friday, Oct. 22, and will continue use officials for two practices per week for the rest of the season, reports The Dallas Morning News' Gerry Fraley. On normal weeks, the officials will be present during Wednesday and Thursday practices. The officials were asked to concentrate on specific infractions, according to head coach Wade Phillips. When a penalty was called, the play was done again. Coaches then reviewed the penalties with the players during Friday practice. The Cowboys lead the league with 80.8 yards per game in penalties and rank second in penalties with 9.8 per game.
