Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle decided to shake up his batting order prior to the game against the Atlanta Braves Friday, April 27, by dropping 1B Casey McGehee to the No. 7 spot in the lineup. OF Garrett Jones was moved up to the cleanup spot, followed by 2B Neil Walker and 3B Pedro Alvarez. This gave the Pirates three consecutive left-handed batters in front of McGehee as they faced right-handed SP Tommy Hanson. Jones, Walker and Alvarez combined to go 2-for-9 with three walks in the game, while McGehee went 1-for-3.

Pittsburgh Pirates INF Casey McGehee will play third base and bat cleanup against the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday, April 7. INF Matt Hague will make his major league debut at first base and bat fifth.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Garrett Jones didn't spend as much time hitting in the cages during the offseason so that he didn't overwork himself. He is expected to form a platoon at first base with 1B Casey McGehee this year. "I just got to work on staying through the ball a little better (against lefties)," Jones said. "Staying through the middle parts of the field off left-handers and seeing the ball a little deeper."

The Pittsburgh Pirates expect 3B Casey McGehee to platoon at first base this year with OF Garrett Jones. McGehee has started just one game in his career at first. "He's got limited experience at first, but we had him out there moving around and I don't think it's going (badly)," manager Clint Hurdle said. "We'll see where the competition takes us." If McGehee proves himself, he could become the full-time starter at the position. He worked with a nutritionist in the offseason, and he's reported to camp 25 pounds lighter than last year as a result.

Updating an earlier report, Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Casey McGehee signed at the midpoint for $2,537,500 on a one-year deal. He can earn $137,500 in bonuses based on plate appearances.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and 3B Casey McGehee will head to an arbitration hearing Feb. 16. McGehee is asking for $2.725 million, while the team has countered with $2.35 million. The two sides will continue to negotiate until the court date.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and 3B Casey McGehee exchanged arbitration figures Tuesday, Jan. 17. McGehee is asking for $2.725 million, while the club countered with $2.35 million. McGehee made $478,000 in 2011 with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez is still expected to be the team's starting third baseman after the acquisition of 3B Casey McGehee. McGehee will be the backup plan at third base, and he can also fill in at first base and in the outfield.
