Detroit Tigers Ps Drew Smyly and Darin Downs are unavailable for the game against the Oakland Athletics Saturday, April 13, after making lengthy appearances Friday, April 12. However, RP Phil Coke (illness) said he would be available to pitch Saturday, despite spending the previous night at the team hotel due to illness.

Detroit Tigers SP Rick Porcello will start the Grapefruit League spring game Friday, Feb. 22, against the Atlanta Braves. Porcello is battling for the fifth spot in the team's rotation. He will be followed by Ps Luis Marte, Luke Putkonen, Jose A. Ortega and Darin Downs. Ps Jose Alvarez and Kenny Faulk, two non-roster invitees, might also get into the mix.

Marc Topkin, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports Tampa Bay Rays P Darin Downs (concussion) was released from the hospital Wednesday, Aug. 26, and is expected to make a full recovery and resume his season next year. Downs reportedly sustained a fractured skull after being hit in the head by a line drive Aug. 17.

Alden Gonzalez, of MLB.com, reports Tampa Bay Rays P Darin Downs (head) is in serious but stable condition after being hit in the head by a line drive while pitching for Double-A Montgomery Monday, Aug. 17. He suffered a fractured skull and is being cared for at St. Vincent's Hospital.
