Twins | Bullpen being reshuffled

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 12:54:16 -0700

The Minnesota Twins' bullpen has undergone a transformation since RP Joe Nathan was demoted from the closer's role recently.

Manager Ron Gardenhire stated that RP Glen Perkins is the most trusted reliever behind RP Matt Capps right now. Perkins has tossed 9 1/3 scoreless innings to begin the year. Perkins' fastball has gone as high as 95 mph this season.

RP Jim Hoey has also gained trust in Gardenhire's eye after working on his split-fingered fastball while in the minors. He is throwing it with decreased velocity, but he is yielding better results with it. His splitter is 10-15 mph slower than his fastball. RP Jose Mijares is another setup candidate.

Nathan's fastball velocity has been down this year and he has struggled with his command, but Gardenhire said his slider is coming back into form and thinks he will improve as the season progresses. "He had to find out, and we had to find out, what he had," Gardenhire said of Nathan. "We had to start him out as our closer. The other role wasn't really set up for him as far as starting the season. Closing was the way it should've been. And if everything didn't work out right away, we could make adjustments. And that's what we saw. And now he sees he has work to do, so it makes it easy for all of us to work our way back to it."
