The Los Angeles Dodgers' fifth rotation spot isn't sealed up yet with SP Chad Billingsley (elbow) returning from Tommy John surgery and SP Josh Beckett (thumb) dinged up. SP Paul Maholm went only 2 2/3 frames Thursday, March 13, and allowed six runs on six hits on a pair of home runs. Maholm will likely be in the bullpen if he cannot beat out Beckett for the final spot. Los Angeles won't need a fifth starter until the middle of April, however. SPs Stephen Fife and Seth Rosin may be options for the rotation if Beckett or Maholm don't work out.

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Chad Billingsley (elbow) reportedly hit 91 mph on the radar gun during his bullpen Wednesday, March 5. "My arm feels better than it did a week ago when I started throwing breaking balls," said Billingsley. "I think throwing harder has helped me get extension and loosened up the flexor muscles." He looks to be on track to return sometime in May, and he expects to throw a few more bullpens before facing live hitters.

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Chad Billingsley (elbow), who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, thinks he could return to action before mid-May. "The rehab has been going great so far. The arm is feeling good. It feels like I have a new arm, really. The elbow started bugging me back in 2008 and it was a gradual deterioration from there, so it's nice to wake up in the morning and not feel like it's stiff and sore. It's a different feeling than I've felt in a long time. It's nice to throw without pain," he said. Billingsley has thrown off a mound 14 times this spring, and he's kept his fastball at 80-85 mph at doctor's orders. He hopes to start throwing breaking pitches this week.
Fantasy Tip: Billingsley could become a midseason option for the Dodgers' rotation and a waiver wire addition if there is an injury in the rotation. If not, they could use him out of the bullpen.

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Zach Lee is ready to make a run at a rotation spot this year, despite the fact that the Dodgers are expected to have a full rotation if SPs Josh Beckett (shoulder) and Chad Billingsley (elbow) return in good health. "I'm trying to win a job, striving to get here as soon as I can. If I pitch well and control what I can control, the opportunity will present itself not far down the road. There are contractual issues, but if you outperform people, there will be a spot for you," Lee said. Scouts are projecting Lee to be a middle-of-the-rotation prospect, and he's currently ranked 63rd on MLB.com's Top-100 list for prospects.
