Rosenfels is battling QB David Carr for the primary backup job to starter QB Eli Manning. Carr sat out Saturday, and will get a chance in the second preseason game.

Kaepernick took some warmup throws and made some passes at the beginning of the workout but allowed QBs Alex Smith and David Carr to take most of the throws during the workout.

Despite Smith's struggles, Singletary said he never once considered playing QB David Carr. "Alex (Smith) is our quarterback," Singletary said. "At no time did I think about putting David Carr into the football game."

Carr took a vacation to Mexico, and the 49ers have sent a contract to him there. His signing will not be official until he returns the deal to the team.

Mike Garafolo, of The Star-Ledger, reports New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese defended the pick of QB Rhett Bomar in the NFL Draft by saying Bomar or QB Andre' Woodson could serve as an insurance policy for a potential departure of QB David Carr down the road. "We drafted Woodson last year. We still like Woodson," Reese said before he could even be asked about what Bomar's arrival means for Woodson. "I know people will start to write him off right away, but that's not true. Who knows how long David Carr will be here?" Head coach Tom Coughlin added Bomar represented good value for the team. "The scouts had very good grades on Bomar," Coughlin said. "There were a lot of people in the room who, when Bomar was picked, stood up and talked about the value of that individual at that time."
