Free-agent SP Rich Harden (shoulder) was advised by doctors initially to strengthen the area around his shoulder instead of having surgery, which is not uncommon for a capsule injury.

Free-agent P Rich Harden (shoulder) had surgery to repair a torn right shoulder capsule and will miss the entire 2012 season. Harden has dealt with the injury for five years and hopes to return in 2013.

Teams are looking at free-agent SP Rich Harden (Athletics) as both a starting pitcher and a reliever, according to major league sources. Harden, who has been very injury-prone in his career, may stand a better chance of staying healthy working out of the bullpen.

The Colorado Rockies are looking for pitching this winter and could look to sign free-agent SPs Kevin Millwood (Rockies), Rich Harden (Athletics) or Bruce Chen (Royals). Oakland Athletics SP Rich Harden allowed three earned runs, seven hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings in a loss Wednesday, Sept. 14, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He threw 56 of his 88 pitches for strikes. He is winless over his past three outings, and the A's are 0-3 during those starts.
