The Los Angeles Dodgers signed free-agent 3B Ian Stewart (Cubs) to an undisclosed deal Friday, July 5.
Fantasy Tip: Stewart likely just provides infield insurance for the Blue, and he'll likely start in the minor leagues. Don't consider him an option for fantasy purposes at the moment, even in NL-only leagues.

The Chicago Cubs designated RP Carlos Marmol for assignment Tuesday, June 25, and recalled OF Brian Bogusevic from the minors in a corresponding move. Also, the team released 3B Ian Stewart.
Fantasy Tip: Marmol had basically zero chance of regaining the closer's role in Chicago, even from Kevin Gregg. The Cubs have the option of trading, releasing or letting Marmol pass through waivers. It's probably unlikely at this point, but depending on where Marmol lands, he could have a shot at pitching in meaningful late-inning situations with another club.

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs 3B Ian Stewart is appealing a 10-game suspension handed down from the organization for his Twitter tirade earlier in the week.

The Chicago Cubs suspended 3B Ian Stewart, who's at Triple-A Iowa, for violating the loyalty cause in his contract. He's appealed the ban. Stewart tweeted comments that criticized the organization and manager Dale Sveum. Stewart accused them of making him "rot" at Triple-A and saying he should be released.

The Chicago Cubs suspended 3B Ian Stewart, who's at Triple-A Iowa, indefinitely without pay because of his violation of the club's loyalty clause that occurred during a Twitter rant Monday, June 10.
Fantasy Tip: Another negative in Stewart's rock-bottom stock.... This doesn't do wonders for him getting another chance with the big-league squad anytime soon.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said 3B Josh Vitters is still a priority for the team in the future. Vitters is batting .259 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 54 at-bats with Triple-A Iowa this year. Sveum said Vitters "has got power, can hit a fastball… but there's a lot of development left in him." 3B Ian Stewart is playing behind Vitters at Iowa.
Fantasy Tip: Based on that, it doesn't sound like the Cubs are rushing to call up Vitters, especially if Luis Valbuena keeps playing the way he is. It's even worse news for Stewart, who probably won't be with the team past this season. Vitters would be an immediate option for NL-only teams were he to be called up, but there's no telling when that might happen.

The Chicago Cubs activated 3B Ian Stewart (quadriceps) from the 15-day disabled list Friday, May 3, and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa.
Fantasy Tip: Stewart wasn't swinging the stick well during his rehab assignment, and he'll need to prove to the club he's ready for a call-up. Plus, the platoon at third base between Luis Valbuena and Cody Ransom has been effective. When Stewart does return, take notice in deep mixed leagues if you need the power potential at corner infield.

Chicago Cubs 3B Ian Stewart (quadriceps) is only 4-for-40 in 12 rehab games with Triple-A Iowa, and manager Dale Sveum said Stewart will need to start swinging better to see consistent at-bats.
Fantasy Tip: Stewart has even admitted that he doesn't think he's ready, so don't expect Chicago to activate him until he starts swinging it. As a result, even though he has intriguing power possibilities, only consider him in NL-only leagues upon his return.

Chicago Cubs 3B Ian Stewart (quadriceps) went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in a rehab game with Triple-A Iowa Tuesday, April 23, and he's only 2-for-24 with a double and three RBIs in seven rehab games.
Fantasy Tip: Cody Ransom and Luis Valbuena have been seeing time at third base in the absence of Stewart. It's unclear when Stewart will return from the DL, but expect Ransom to be sent out when that happens. Although both hit from the left side, Stewart and Valbuena could form a platoon at the hot corner. Stewart has more power, but you have to wonder if his injuries will continue to take a toll on his home run swing. He's worth owning in deep mixed leagues, though.
