Braves | Nick Markakis not hitting homers

Wed, 20 May 2015 11:16:32 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis has yet to hit a home run this year despite having a solid year to this point. However, he is 5-for-11 with a home run and two walks in his career against Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi, who he'll face Wednesday, May 20. Markakis is homerless in his last 39 regular season games and 148 at-bats. He has just seven extra-base hits (all doubles) and 37 singles in that time. Markakis has hit double-digit home runs in each of his previous nine seasons and had 14 home runs in 2014 despite playing with a herniated disc in his back. His reduced power could be related to the neck surgery he had last December after he missed much of spring training. He has stayed healthy this year, though, playing 37 of 38 games, including 36 in right field.

Fantasy Tip: Markakis ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) is hitting .298 (42-for-141) with 10 RBI on the season, but he's not your prototypical cleanup hitter, and his placement there is likely to be a short-term deal. He won't go homerless all season long, but expecting another double-digit homer season might be foolish at this point. As long as he continues to swing a hot stick, he's not a bad FantasyScore option, just don't expect him to fill out the stat sheet elsewhere.

Braves | Nick Markakis moved to cleanup spot

Fri, 15 May 2015 13:00:36 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis is batting fourth against the Miami Marlins Friday, May 15.

Fantasy Tip: Markakis ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) is in a nice groove at the plate sporting a .324 batting average and .405 on-base percentage, and he'll see more RBI opportunities batting fourth, especially behind Freddie Freeman. However, Markakis hasn't hit a home run yet this season, and he has just five extra-base hits, so that limits his FantasyScore upside. Still, at his cap hit, Markakis is a nice low-priced option.

Braves | Nick Markakis still on top

Mon, 04 May 2015 19:46:26 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis was in the leadoff spot for the 10th consecutive game Monday, May 4, against the Philadelphia Phillies. "He gets on base and he puts the ball in play," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I like it and, really, from all of the options that we have he's the one that makes the most sense."

Fantasy Tip: Markakis ($2,900; 5.8% of cap) has posted just 15 strikeouts in 104 plate appearances. While his chance at RBI chances might be decreased in the leadoff spot, he will have more chance at runs scored for FantasyScore players.

Braves | Nick Markakis to remain at leadoff

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 15:57:59 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis will remain the team's lead-off hitter, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez, Tuesday, April 28. Markakis owns an on-base percentage of .426.

Fantasy Tip: Markakis ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) is hitting .333 on the season with 13 runs scored and a team high 12 walks. Markakis doesn't have a whole lot of support behind him but with the potential for an extra at-bat every game, he should be able to succeed on his own. Markakis is worthy of FantasyScore starts in good matchups, against either left-handed or right-handed pitchers.

Braves | Freddie Freeman, Nick Markakis hot

Tue, 21 Apr 2015 14:38:29 -0700

Atlanta Braves 1B Freddie Freeman and OF Nick Markakis combined to go 12-for-20 with nine runs scored over the weekend, and Freeman has four home runs in the last eight games. Markakis is hitting .375 to start the year.

Fantasy Tip: Both Freeman ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) and Markakis ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) should be considered strong plays at FantasyScore while they are hot at the plate. However, you may want to reconsider starting them both in daily games tonight while facing New York Mets starter Jon Niese, a lefty.

Braves | Nick Markakis perfect at the plate

Sat, 18 Apr 2015 05:11:24 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis went 4-for-4 with three runs scored against the Toronto Blue Jays Friday, April 17.

Fantasy Tip: Markakis ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) is off to a strong start at the plate with seven hits in his last three games. He is not a great source of power for owners, but he could be used on FantasyScore if owners are looking for help with their batting average.

Braves | Nick Markakis not playing

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 08:25:42 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis is not in the starting lineup against Miami Marlins SP Dan Haren Wednesday, April 15. 2B Kelly Johnson is starting in right field and hitting fifth in the batting order.

Fantasy Tip: Markakis is likely just receiving an off day in a day game following a night contest. Johnson ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) isn't a recommendation at FantasyScore Wednesday. He managed to hit just .220 with six home runs against right-handed pitchers in 2014.

Braves | Nick Markakis opening day status

Thu, 02 Apr 2015 16:22:10 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis (neck) said there's a "95% chance" he'll be ready for opening day Monday, April 6, and said he's where he needs to be physically. He and the Braves have said for at least two weeks they were planning on him being ready opening day. Markakis is 2-for-19 with one double and one RBI in six Grapefruit League games entering play Thursday, April 2.

Fantasy Tip: Markakis ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) has rarely missed time due to injury in his career. He's reached or exceeded 700 plate appearances the last two years. If he returns to his pre-injury form, he can be a modest across the board contributor worth a late-round selection in mixed leagues.

Braves | Nick Markakis on track for opening day

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 15:37:13 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis played right field for six innings without issue Tuesday, March 24, and manager Fredi Gonzalez said he was confident Markakis would be ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: If you're looking for secure production in the late stages of drafts, Markakis fits the bill. While there is limited upside, he chips in across all fantasy categories and has avoided injury in all but one season during his nine-year career. Continue to check back for updates, but unless there are setbacks, Markakis looks set for opening day.
