San Diego Padres manager Bud Black is waiting to announce a starting pitcher for the game Wednesday, Aug. 28, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The spot is vacant because the team designated SP Edinson Volquez for assignment last week. Ps Robbie Erlin and Tim Stauffer appear to be in the mix to fill the role, at least temporarily.

San Diego Padres SP Edinson Volquez walked seven batters in his start Saturday, June 22, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is the first Padres pitcher to do so since SP Tim Stauffer Aug. 30, 2011. Volquez is also the first San Diego pitcher to walk seven or more hitters and strike out seven or more batters in the same game since former SP Eric Show May 15, 1986.

San Diego Padres SP Tim Stauffer (elbow) threw for the first time off a mound Wednesday, Feb. 13, since last August. "We'll ease into it a little more than normal," Stauffer said. "At this point, it's tough to gauge. We will just have to see how it goes. But right now, everything is going along as planned." He can make $1 million if he's on the active roster this year and incentives could raise the deal to $1.25 million based on the number of games started. He can request his release if he's not on the roster by June 1.
