Phillies | Delmon Young activated

Tue, 30 Apr 2013 12:21:05 -0700

The Philadelphia Phillies activated OF Delmon Young (ankle) from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, April 30, and designated OF Ezequiel Carrera for assignment in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: The Phillies had expressed concern with Young's defensive prowess in right field during his rehab assignment, so it's unclear how often he'll be starting initially. For now, though, he should be considered in mixed leagues and added in NL-only universes.

Phillies | Delmon Young not close to returning

Fri, 26 Apr 2013 14:59:35 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Delmon Young (ankle) is progressing on his minor league rehab assignment, but his return to the big league team is not imminent, even though the team could use a designated hitter early next week, according to assistant general manager Scott Proefrock. Young played his second rehab game with Triple-A Lehigh Valley Friday, April 26. The Phillies believe that Young needs more time to learn right field, a position he hasn't played since 2007. The latest date for Young's season debut would be May 11, barring any injury setback.

Fantasy Tip: The Phillies aren't happy with Young's defensive showing so far during his rehab assignment, but at the same time, it'll allow them to make sure that his ankle is completely healthy. Philadelphia has Ezequiel Carrera, Laynce Nix and John Mayberry Jr. as outfield depth, so their is no rush to bring Young back. When he does return, he should only be rostered immediately in deep NL leagues.

Phillies | Delmon Young begins rehab

Sun, 21 Apr 2013 18:29:28 -0700

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Phillies OF Delmon Young (ankle) went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a strikeout for Class A Clearwater Sunday, April 21, in the first game of a minor-league rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Saturday that Young isn't ready to be with the big-league team yet, so it sounds like Young has a while before he is going to be back. Fantasy owners need to continue to bide their time. Wait until he can officially return and prove his health in consecutive games before plugging him into your active fantasy lineup. That might not be until May at this point.

Phillies | Delmon Young will have to play defense

Fri, 12 Apr 2013 15:40:45 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Delmon Young (ankle) played another seven innings in right field in extended spring training Thursday, April 11, and he could start a rehab assignment sometime next week. There is still no timetable for his return, and general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Young must show that he can play the outfield efficiently before the team has him rejoin the roster. "Delmon isn't going to come here unless he can play right field," Amaro said. "If he can't play right field, he ain't coming."

Fantasy Tip: Amaro didn't really give a ringing endorsement of Young's performance yesterday, so now it seems as though Young might have a longer road back than it appeared. The team was already concerned about Young's conditioning when they signed him as a free agent, and he'll have to prove he's prepared to play the outfield at a high level before returning. The Phillies have other options now - John Mayberry Jr., Ezequiel Carrera and Laynce Nix - so they won't rush Young.

Tue, 09 Apr 2013 09:43:48 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Delmon Young (ankle) went 0-for-5 as the designated hitter in extended spring training Monday, April 8, and ran the bases after flying out in his final at-bat. C Carlos Ruiz also caught six innings in the same game and went 0-for-4 with two walks, a sac fly and two RBIs.

Fantasy Tip: Ruiz is currently serving a 25-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. If he's available on your waiver wire, he should be scooped up for when he returns, especially in two-catcher formats.
