Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde's fastball has been key to his success this season as he returns to the closer's role in Detroit. "That's most important for him," MLB analyst Orel Hershiser said. "To just be able to throw that fastball low and away for a strike." Of Valverde's 57 pitches he's thrown in four outings so far, he's thrown only six split-finger fastballs. He threw 18.7 percent splitters last season, which was down from 20.5 percent in 2011. Manager Jim Leyland noted that Valverde's split got away from him late last season when he was struggling, but he thinks he can regain control of the pitch. MLive.com's James Schmehl suggests Valverde might not be throwing the splitter that much right now because he's still trying to gain control of it and because the weather has been cold.

Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde recorded his first save with the team against the Kansas City Royals Wednesday, April 24, and he was hitting 95 mph on the radar gun with his fastball. "I've caught him for three years," C Alex Avila said. "I've caught him where his ball hasn't had much movement, and I've caught him in years past when he's had a little bit of sink, a little bit of cut. Today it looked like he was able to command both, and was able to go to both sides of the plate."
Fantasy Tip: Scouting reports on Valverde out of Florida about his increased velocity appear to be true. This is music to Valverde's owner's ears. He also looks to be slimmer. He should now be owned in all leagues, and Joaquin Benoit can be dropped in mixed leagues.

Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde can make $5 million this season based on incentives.

Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde will be recalled from the minors Wednesday, April 24, and manager Jim Leyland said he will serve as the team's closer.
Fantasy Tip: Bruce Rondon was also called up from Triple-A Toledo today, but he'll likely be used in less stressful situations in his first taste of regular season big league action. There's a decent chance that Valverde is still available in your mixed league, so run to the waiver wire and grab him. Joaquin Benoit was never Detroit's long-term solution at closer and shouldn't be expected to receive any save chances moving forward with both Valverde and Rondon in the picture.
Rondon is worth holding since Valverde hasn't been tested against major league competition since relinquishing the ninth-inning role to Phil Coke in the playoffs last year. Leyland has announced his loyalty to Valverde, but if he doesn't get the job done, Rondon will be given an opportunity to take the job and run with it.

The Detroit Tigers plan to call up RP Jose Valverde from the minors within days.
Fantasy Tip: Bruce Rondon was called up today, so the addition of Valverde will further complicate the Tigers' plans for the back end of their bullpen. Joaquin Benoit has done a solid job as the closer so far, but Jim Leyland may be getting ready to go back to a closer-by-committee soon if Valverde and Rondon prove effective. For now, hang onto Benoit until we know more. Rondon and Valverde are worth owning, too, but it's more speculation right now until we learn exactly how Leyland plans to use them.

Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde struck out four and didn't walk any in two innings of an extended spring game Monday, April 15, for his second appearance since re-signing with the team. He's expected to join Triple-A Toledo in the near future.
Fantasy Tip: Valverde still has to prove himself at Toledo, but it may not be long until the Tigers seriously consider bringing him back to the majors. Keep him on your radar in mixed leagues, but it might be the time to own him in AL-only leagues if you're searching for saves.

Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde threw a bullpen session in Lakeland, Fla. Wednesday, April 10. He is expected to pitch Friday, April 12, in an extended spring training game, and again in a scrimmage Monday, April 15.

Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde threw for one of the club's scouts in the Dominican Republic Saturday, March 30, and per general manager Dave Dombrowski, reports said Valverde's velocity was solid, touching the mid-90s. Valverde also threw some split-finger fastballs for the observer, which was a positive sign because he rarely used the pitch last year.
Fantasy Tip: Again, it's a risk-free trial to see if Valverde can get back to his pre-2012 form, especially with his splitter. If he shows significant improvement and their committee continues to underwhelm, Detroit will probably give him first dibs at closures again. A little patience could pay off with a Valverde fantasy stash. Even if he doesn't catch on with Detroit, someone else may need a closer by the time May arrives.
Thu, 04 Apr 2013 10:54:29 -0700
There is no timetable or certainty that Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde will join the major league roster. He'll be assigned to Triple-A Toledo to start.
Fantasy Tip: Valverde is probably on most league's waiver wires. He should be scooped up in all AL formats. In mixed leagues, if you're desperate for saves, you probably shouldn't wait around until/when he's called up to Detroit.
Thu, 04 Apr 2013 09:32:38 -0700
The Detroit Tigers re-signed free-agent RP Jose Valverde to a minor league contract.
Fantasy Tip: He has an opt-out clause for May 5 if he's not in the majors. He's worth an add in AL-only leagues and is worth watching in mixed leagues. Let's remember that his stuff really tapered off last season. Phil Coke, Joaquin Benoit and Al Alburquerque probably have better stuff and brighter fantasy outlooks than Papa Grande right now. But this is not good news for those hoping for Bruce Rondon to resurface in the closer spotlight.
