Detroit Tigers minor league RP Jose Valverde (personal), currently with Triple-A Toledo, was placed on the inactive list so that he can attend to a family matter. There is no timetable for his return.

Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde has accepted his outright assignment to Triple-A Toledo.

Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski indicated that RP Jose Valverde could still be useful as a closer if the team gets him fixed. Dombrowski said Valverde is "a guy who can still close games for us."
Fantasy Tip: Who knows how long it might take to get Valverde "fixed," and there's no guarantee that will even happen. Plus, Bruce Rondon is the likely future in the ninth inning. It's probably safe to cut bait on Valverde unless you're in a really deep AL league.

The Detroit Tigers designated RP Jose Valverde for assignment Friday, June 21.
Fantasy Tip: Well, so much for a committee approach to the ninth inning in Detroit. Papa Grande can now be dropped in all formats, as Jim Leyland has passed the torch to Joaquin Benoit for the time being. Bruce Rondon remains a long-term candidate for the job, and he could be brought up very soon.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland would not indicate what role RP Jose Valverde will have if he is not closing games for the team. "What I'll do is I'll pitch him when I see fit, and try to do that intelligently," Leyland said. "I don't know exactly how it'll work out, because I don't know how the games are going to go."

Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers RP Joaquin Benoit will serve as the team's closer when he's "healthy and available."
Fantasy Tip: Well, that settles it. It appears that Jose Valverde has been demoted from the closer role, aside from duties when Benoit isn't available. Benoit should now be owned everywhere.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland is refusing to name a closer in the ninth inning, but he said he would try to use RP Joaquin Benoit in a save situation Thursday, June 20, if he was available.
Fantasy Tip: Leyland has gone to a committee approach to the ninth inning involving Benoit and Jose Valverde, but it looks as though Leyland Benoit right now. Valverde hasn't been completely demoted, but Benoit, and maybe others, will infringe upon his chances. Pick Benoit up immediately if he's still available.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland didn't give RP Jose Valverde a vote of confidence when asked about the team's closer situation Monday, June 17. Leyland said "we'll find out tonight," when asked about the team's closer.
Fantasy Tip: Leyland used Joaquin Benoit for the save against the Minnesota Twins Sunday because he felt Benoit was the better option. However, he's not admitting that Benoit is the new closer over Valverde. It appears that Leyland is comfortable using a closer-by-committee with Benoit and Valverde after Valverde blew his third save of the year last week.
Benoit is worth an addition to your fantasy roster in deep mixed leagues if you're searching for saves. Expect Valverde to continue to see some save chances, but his workload will be less predictable now. Bruce Rondon, who is the best long-term option for the closer's role, could be in line for a call-up soon if Leyland isn't happy with Benoit or Valverde. Keep Rondon on your radar.
