The Associated Press reports the Washington Redskins' punting battle between P Derrick Frost and P Durant Brooks went down to the wire. Frost and Brooks each punted three times in the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 28. Frost had a better average, but Brooks put two inside the Jacksonville Jaguars' 20-yard line.

Frost is second in the NFL in average yards per punt with a 49.3-yard average. His net average of 40.1 yards per punt is eighth in the league.

"Derrick needs to be more consistent. I noted that. He knows that and needs to work hard on that," Gibbs said. "… Certainly we need a smoother performance, a more consistent performance out of him."

Howard Bryant, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins PK John Hall will likely not do much beyond field goals, according to head coach Joe Gibbs. That will leave P Derrick Frost and P David Lonie to compete for the punting job and for kickoffs. Gibbs said, "I think John has had real good work. As a matter of fact, he's healthy. I think our thing with John is to keep him from overworking. I feel real comfortable with a veteran guy like that around."

"We have to be in the top 10," special teams coach Danny Smith said. "Our coverage is outstanding (second in the NFL last year), but we need to punt the ball a little better. I'm anxious to see where we can bring Derrick to now that we've had him a whole year." Frost radically changed his offseason routine, punting nearly half as much as normal.

Crennel said he'll flip a coin to decide whether Frost or Richardson will punt first during the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 13. He said the loser of the coin flip will start the game as the holder for field goals and PAT's.
