New York Mets OF Jason Bay (rib) took live batting practice at the team's spring training complex Thursday, May 24. He is expected to be the designated hitter in some minor league games next week.

Updating a previous report, New York Mets OF Jason Bay (rib) said Sunday, May 20, that he will attempt to take batting practice Monday, May 21, in Pittsburgh. "Definitely plausible," Bay said. He might be able to return within a week.

New York Mets OF Jason Bay (rib) could begin taking full batting practice during the team's road trip next week in Pittsburgh. He has been hitting off a tee in Toronto and will speak with the team's medical staff via telephone before taking the next step in his rehab.

Updating a previous report, New York Mets manager Terry Collins said OF Jason Bay (rib) will not lose his starting job in left field when he returns from the disabled list. "Absolutely," Collins said. "He didn't come here to be an extra player." However, Collins said it'll be another 10 days or two weeks before Bay is back. OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who is hitting .294 with two home runs and 12 RBIs, could theoretically platoon with Bay or he could be sent down to Triple-A Buffalo.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said OF Jason Bay (rib) will "probably" return to his starting left field duties when he comes back from the disabled list, but Collins wants to get OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis significant playing time, too.
