Wed, 22 May 2013 14:59:15 -0700 Seattle Mariners OF Jason Bay is batting leadoff Wednesday, May 22, and OF Mike Morse has been moved to No. 3 in the lineup. OF Michael Saunders is 4-for-32 (.125) with a .152 on-base percentage and a .188 slugging percentage during the team's road trip. Saunders is hitting second Wednesday and 3B Kyle Seager was rested. "I think he's expanded the (strike) zone a little bit from time to time," manager Eric Wedge said of Saunders. "You know what? When he stays in his zone, he does some damage. So, I think he's just expanded his zone, is trying to do too much. So, again, we're at our best when these guys are willing and able to set the bat down and take the walk and let the next guy get a shot at it." Fantasy Tip: Bay has actually been respectable in his time with the M's, and he's been more valuable in on-base percentage leagues. Don't automatically pass him up on the waiver wire in deep mixed leagues if you need help in this category.
Sun, 12 May 2013 10:55:12 -0700 Seattle Mariners OF/DH Raul Ibanez started in left field for the second consecutive game Saturday, May 11, against the Oakland Athletics, because manager Eric Wedge wanted him to feel more comfortable at the plate. Ibanez went 1-for-3, raising his average to .194, but OF Jason Bay is expected to play left field Sunday, May 12.
Fri, 26 Apr 2013 16:00:12 -0700 Seattle Mariners OF Jason Bay is hitting leadoff for the first time this season Friday, April 26. Fantasy Tip: Curious move since he's hitting .220 on the season. Maybe simplifying things and encouraging him to just get on base will provide results.
Tue, 23 Apr 2013 15:30:02 -0700 Seattle Mariners OF Endy Chavez will see the bulk of playing time in center field, and OF Jason Bay will be the emergency center fielder with OF Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) on the disabled list. Fantasy Tip: Chavez should now be a consideration for ownership in deep enough mixed leagues for his speed contributions and the fact that he'll be playing pretty much every day with Gutierrez out of the picture.
Fri, 19 Apr 2013 16:30:07 -0700 Seattle Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez (legs) is out of the lineup for the second straight day with stiffness in his legs Friday, April 19. "We're still trying to help him with his lower half," manager Eric Wedge said. "I think it's tough with his hips, where it gets a little bit out of line and that's where it affects his legs." Gutierrez could be used as a pinch hitter later in the game, though. The team may choose to part ways with OFs Raul Ibanez or Jason Bay when OF Michael Saunders (shoulder) returns from the disabled list next week instead of risking OF Endy Chavez to waivers. Fantasy Tip: The Mariners would probably prefer to keep Chavez around just because Gutierrez has had trouble staying on the field. Saunders can play center field, too, if Chavez is placed on waivers. The bottom line is that Bay and Ibanez will lose out on playing time when Saunders returns.
Fri, 12 Apr 2013 15:29:16 -0700 Seattle Mariners OF Endy Chavez is leading off Friday, April 12, with OFs Michael Saunders (shoulder) and Mike Morse (finger) out of the lineup. OF Franklin Gutierrez played his fifth straight game Thursday, April 11. OF Jason Bay is in right field and OF Raul Ibanez is starting in left. Fantasy Tip: Expect Chavez to see pretty regular playing time because Seattle wants to keep Gutierrez fresh to avoid health problems he's had in the past. Chavez can also rotate at the other outfield positions when Bay or Ibanez need a breather. Morse is expected to be out up to a week, so plan accordingly.
Sun, 31 Mar 2013 20:53:55 -0700 Seattle Mariners OF Jason Bay edged out OF Casper Wells for the fifth and final outfield roster spot, as the team designated Wells for reassignment Sunday, March 31. Fantasy Tip: As a fifth outfielder, Bay isn't a great fantasy option. He is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only leagues right now.
Thu, 28 Mar 2013 18:15:47 -0700 The Seattle Mariners still have not decided whether OF Jason Bay or OF Casper Wells will make the 25-man roster and likely will delay the decision until the deadline. The team would have to release or trade Wells if he does not make the team since he is out of options.
Sun, 24 Mar 2013 20:28:58 -0700 Seattle Mariners OF Jason Bay has hit the ball well during spring training, but he is in a fight with OF Casper Wells for a roster spot. Wells is out of options, so the Mariners might keep him rather than risk losing him through waivers.
Mon, 25 Feb 2013 15:41:52 -0800 Despite hitting a home run in the spring game Monday, Feb. 25, Seattle Mariners OF Jason Bay faces long odds to make the team's roster. "I've kind of refound it," Bay said. "I've struggled for a while. I tried a million things trying to save face. Nothing was working, and I got so far away from doing what I had done before that I forgot how to do it." Being healthy this offseason has allowed Bay to try to search for his old approach. Bay could be in competition for a spot with OF Casper Wells, and Wells has an advantage because he plays all three outfield positions well.
