Rich Cimini reports for the New York Daily News changes could be afoot at WR for the New York Jets. Wayne Chrebet will be back from his concussion this week, rookie Santana Moss (knee) is close to coming back, Windrell Hayes has been released and Matthew Hatchette may be moved to flanker from split end. Rookie QB Tory Woodbury, known as a "Slash" type player, will get a shot at split end. The Jets have avoided putting a return date out there for Moss, but on Monday, coach Herman Edwards, encouraged by the progress in the rookie's rehabilitation, speculated for the first time, indicating that Moss might be able to play as early as November 18 in Miami. Moss said he won't play until his knee is as good as new.

The New York Daily News' Rich Cimini reports the New York Jets plan to use No. 3 QB Tory Woodbury will be thrown into the mix at wide receiver this week now that Windrell Hayes has been released. Hayes, as reported, was less valuable to the team because he doesn't play special teams. Woodbury made his debut on special teams last weekend. The team plans to use both Chad Morton and Craig Yeast on kick and put return teams now that Morton is healthy enough to return.

The Associated Press reports the New York Jets have have released WR Windrell Hayes. He played in his first game of the year yesterday. "It never worked out for him," Jets coach Herman Edwards said of Hayes. "If you're a receiver who can help on special teams, your stock goes way up. That's what hurt Windrell. He didn't play special teams." The Jets are overloaded at the WR position. Agent Peter Schaffer said Hayes was surprised by the move and that he expects Hayes to sign with another team very quickly.

The NY Times reports after signing WR Matthew Hatchette on Monday GM Terry Bradway said he would not sign another free agent WR. Instead the team is expected to look for WR help in the NFL draft. That player could be their third, fourth or fifth receiver and also return kicks. The Jets may be looking at Hatchette as a starter, but he'll have competition from WRs Laveranues Coles and Windrell Hayes. DT Jason Ferguson (shoulder surgery) is expected to attend this week's mini-camp but he will not see action. C Kevin Mawae, who has a lingering elbow injury, may be limited in his participation.

Rich Cimini reports for the Sporting News New York Jets QB Vinny Testaverde has now purchased a house in New York and he is fully committed to the team's off-season workout program. Testaverde has to learn a new offense as new offensive coordinator Paul Hackett plans to install the West Coast offense. WR Windrell Hayes, who played under Hackett at USC, could benefit strongly from the presence of Hackett and his new offense. The new staff is high on Hayes and speedy Laveranues Coles. Apparently, there will be no effort to re-sign free agent WR Dedric Ward.

As previously reported, the New York Daily News reports QB Vinny Testaverde (groin) didn't play in the second half because of a pulled groin. Backup QB Ray Lucas hobbled to the sideline for two plays but later returned. Emergency QB Chad Pennington finished the game and produced his first NFL touchdown. Rookie WR Laveranues Coles, who missed two games with a sprained knee, was dressed for the game. Coles, who had been listed as doubtful all week, didn't play on offense. Rookie Windrell Hayes remained the No. 3 wideout.
