The AP reports San Diego Padres pitcher Carlton Loewer pitched five solid innings as the San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1 on Monday night, his first win since a hunting accident in January 2000. ''It feels good to be back, and I just want to stay back,'' Loewer said. ''I want to stay here. I can't describe the feeling because it feels great.''

The AP reports SP Carlton Loewer of the San Diego Padres made his first major league start in Saturday's game since June 16, 2001. Loewer missed almost two seasons' worth of time due to injuries he sustained in a hunting accident. He gave up three earned runs and 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings and took the loss in a 12-2 defeat at the hands of the Atlanta Braves. ''It was kind of bittersweet with the outcome of the ballgame,'' he said. ''But it felt good to get back out there and come through. I was really happy with how I threw.''

MLB.com's Mike Scarr reports SP Carlton Loewer, just called up Friday by the San Diego Padres, will join the team's starting rotation. His first start is set for Saturday against the Atlanta Braves.

The AP reports the San Diego Padres purchased the contract of SP Carlton Loewer Friday from Triple-A Portland. Loewer had gone 5-2 in eight starts at Portland with a 4.50 ERA.
