"That's like the one that said I was run out of St. Louis (after the 1999 Super Bowl season)," Vermeil said. "People who make a living on speculation are an embarrassment to the media."

He wrapped himself in a tight embrace with his boss when somebody mentioned Napa, the site of Vermeil's winery. "I wouldn't read anything into that right now," Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson said. "It's been a long season. By next Monday, Jan. 2, Kansas City will be hanging on a decision from Vermeil, who's 69 and in the final year of his contract. Peterson says his coach hasn't made up his mind.

Peterson said he's always thinking ahead about future players or coaches, but nothing has been decided about head coach Dick Vermeil's future.

Bailey accused the Chiefs on national television of not even playing hard. "The way they played up there in Kansas City, it ain't the same, though," said Bailey, who was miked by ABC-TV. Speaking to teammates on the Denver bench after the Broncos had taken control of the game in the first half; Bailey was clearly heard to say, "They're playing a little different. They're not playing as hard. I ain't going to relax, though." Vermeil tried to downplay Bailey's remarks, but was clearly irritated. "That's why I don't allow players to be miked. I don't know what (Bailey) was referring to. That's a player's opinion," he said.

The surgery required 34 stitches. The 68-year old Vermeil said that he had red makes on his nose that he ignored too long, figuring they would go away. Vermeil was at the team's practice Monday, June 6, with his hat pulled down on his head and sporting a large bandage on his nose.

Vermeil let loose with his words, hollering at a Minnesota trainer that the Vikings should take a shotgun and "shoot (Jones) in the head." According to the report, several neutral observers didn't think Jones' play was malicious, simply aggressive.
