Rick Maese, of The Washington Post, reports former NFL head coach Dick Vermeil said he believes Washington Redskins RB Larry Johnson will beat out RB Clinton Portis for the team's starting running back spot. "He will take over the running back position," Vermeil said. "That's what I think. He'll push that guy right out of a job. Larry Johnson will work all week - he'll work Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday - and he'll make you start him on Sundays."

The Associated Press reports former St. Louis Rams head coach Dick Vermeil doubts dirty tricks prevented the team from winning the Super Bowl in 2002 versus the New England Patriots. Vermeil added that it is players who win games, not schemes. "Personally, I don't think it had any effect on the game," Vermeil said. "That stuff's been going on forever and I don't think you gain from it. But if people are doing it they must think it's making a contribution."

Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil has taken exception to critics who feel current head coach Herman Edwards is too conservative offensively. "The system's the same," Vermeil said. "I don't think they're not trying to score, you know? I know the coaches. I've talked with them. They've had some pass protection problems, and that limits you some. And sometimes there's a little different approach to using the same scheme. But I think they'll hit a happy medium, a very pleasant medium with the offense. It'll be very efficient."

"I think he deserves the opportunity," said Vermeil. "He's paid his dues. He's a super football coach, a super person with a tremendous work ethic. And I think someone, one of these so-called geniuses in the National Football League, is going to recognize that. We've got a lot of guys in positions that are scary."

Vermeil had a sharp one-word response when asked about the report Tuesday, Dec. 27. "That's bull (bleep)!" he retorted when asked about the report that said his future wasn't in his hands. "That's like the one that said I was run out of St. Louis (after the 1999 Super Bowl season)," Vermeil said. "People who make a living on speculation are an embarrassment to the media."
