Mon, 26 Dec 2011 17:41:58 -0800

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz seemed to indicate none, if any, of his players will be rested in the Week 17 regular season finale against the Green Bay Packers. "We're going to play the game to win," Schwartz said Monday, Dec. 26, citing Wild Card teams which have made a run to the Super Bowl. "I think a lot of that starts this week. You look at those teams; it wasn't just what they did when they got into the playoffs, it's where they were at the end of the season. You certainly want to go in with momentum. You want to go in with wins, you want to go in healthy."

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said DL Ndamukong Suh must learn to stay aggressive while playing within league rules. "Everything that (Suh) does is going to be put under a microscope," Schwartz said. (The penalties weren't) a result of anything other than aggressive play."

After blitzing sparingly during its first two games, Detroit surrendered 20 points in the first half in Week 3 blitzing heavily. "If your blitz doesn't get there, you leave corners one-on-one and ... (Dallas has) some guys that can run through tackles and create big plays," Schwartz said.

Lions | Week 16 quarterback a game-time decision?

Tue, 21 Dec 2010 09:05:53 -0800

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said Monday, Dec. 20, he has yet to decide who will start the team's Week 16 game at quarterback, according to Dave Birkett, of the Detroit Free Press. Schwartz added he may not reveal his starting quarterback until game time. QBs Drew Stanton (shoulder) and Shaun Hill (finger) are dealing with injuries, while QB Matthew Stafford (shoulder) remains on the mend and is not expected back this week. "Health of all the other quarterbacks, the availability of all the other quarterbacks, health of Drew - all those other things will go into it," Schwartz said when asked how he'll decide who starts. "We'll cross that bridge Wednesday when we get to it. You're not going to paint me into a corner on who the starter's going to be or what the criteria is going to be. We'll make the best decision for the football team and probably won't announce it until maybe Sunday."

Lions | Not planning to keep a kickoff specialist

Wed, 07 Jul 2010 14:55:05 -0700

The Detroit Lions will likely take a second kicker into training camp to share the workload with PK Jason Hanson, but head coach Jim Schwartz said a kickoff specialist is not in the plans for now, reports Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press. Schwartz said, "I mean, if the need arose -- I don't foresee that happening -- but if it was a reason it would happen. It gets your roster a little bit because when you carry a long snapper -- that's only a long snapper. And then a kickoff specialist -- that's only a kickoff specialist. It's not just your 53, but it's your active 45 on Sundays. It makes it difficult."

Lions | Lose their final two OTAs

Wed, 23 Jun 2010 14:48:51 -0700

The Detroit Lions were docked their final two OTA sessions by the NFL for violating offseason workout rules "pertaining to the intensity and tempo of drills," reports Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press. Head coach Jim Schwartz said, "The first practice with rookies is going to be more guys on the ground. It's going to be a little bit looser because you have rookies that are trying to make a good first impression. You have veterans that don't want to be beaten by a rookie. Like I said, our track record of keeping players healthy and doing a nice job with player safety can handle a lot of that stuff. But they looked at that practice and didn't like the look of it."

Lions | Jim Schwartz says rookies are settling in

Tue, 22 Jun 2010 14:51:01 -0700

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said he is pleased with the progress the team's rookies have made, reports Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press. Schwartz said, "They're in much better condition. a fire drill when they're out there on the field. So they're doing a good job assimilating. We've had very few people on the ground the last couple practices. The first practices with the rookies, there were a lot of guys on the ground. They just don't know how to practice in the NFL. And that's starting to settle down now."

Lions | Would like most of offense installed by training camp

Tue, 15 Jun 2010 14:01:49 -0700

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the team has installed about 80 percent of their playbook, and he would like to install another 15 percent by the end of the team's minicamp, reports Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press. Schwartz said, "Where you'd like to be is about 95% installed by the time we get to training camp. You get to training camp, you're not really installing new things. You're just sort of re-emphasizing and hitting some subtle points rather than overall installation."

Lions | Might carry three QBs in training camp

Sun, 02 May 2010 14:50:04 -0700

The Detroit Lions might not carry a fourth quarterback in training camp unless they have an injury, reports Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press. Head coach Jim Schwartz said, "I'm not sure if we'll go with four." He added, "It's just hard to get four quarterbacks a lot of work in camp. When you're rolling through, it's one thing if you have a veteran that's not practicing very much."

Lions | Unlikely to sign Keith Bulluck

Tue, 27 Apr 2010 06:44:44 -0700

The Detroit Lions are not expected to sign free-agent LB Keith Bulluck (Titans), reports Tim Twentyman, of the Detroit News. Bulluck is coming off of a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury last season, which is a concern to head coach Jim Schwartz. "You're talking about a guy coming off an ACL (tear) - we have three guys already coming off of ACL's, and we know where they are, so it's probably not at the point where we would be doing anything right there," Schwartz said. Schwartz, however, seemed pretty confident that the team would still add a linebacker or two this offseason.

"We were having dinner the night before one of the games," Schwartz said, "and Scott said, 'Wow, have you seen that running back from Cal? Man, what I would do for a running back like that. That guy's just really - I don't know if he's coming out, what he would do in the draft, but I just watched him play a game and that guy is everything we're looking for.'"

Lions | Could Suh be the pick?

Tue, 20 Apr 2010 03:46:41 -0700

Tim Twentyman, of the Detroit News, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said Monday, April 19, to roughly 1,500 season-ticket holders during a pre-NFL Draft event that they will not be disappointed with the team's first-round selection. Throughout the event, the crowd was chanting "Suh, Suh," in reference to Nebraska DL Ndamukong Suh. "Let me say this, the draft board has been pretty solidly set. We are going to go over some mock-draft scenarios over the next couple days and cover all of our options. There are a lot of different ways we can go, but you won't be disappointed," Schwartz said as the crowd was chanting "Suh, Suh".

Lions | Schwartz says he needs to work on his temper

Mon, 18 Jan 2010 17:33:08 -0800

Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz believes he needs to work on controlling his temper better for next season. Schwartz said, "I take pride in being even-keeled. I take pride in being the same way whether we win or lose. There have been some Mondays where obviously my temper was little bit shorter than others, and there are times that I've showed my displeasure with certain things that have happened on the field and things like that. But I'd like to be that head coach that is the same whether we're winning or losing, the same whether we're 10-1 or 1-10. I wasn't that way this year, but it was me. I'll work on it."

Lions | Mangini implies team faked injuries Week 11

Mon, 23 Nov 2009 21:15:40 -0800

Tom Withers, of The Associated Press, reports Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini believes the Detroit Lions faked some injuries to slow down the Browns' no-huddle offense Week 11. Mangini noted the Lions had several players leave the field injured, only to return. Mangini was asked if he was accusing the Lions of faking injuries. Mangini said, "I'm just saying there were a lot of them." Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said, "He's way out of bounds on that. That couldn't be further from the truth. Both teams were running no huddle, and the officials did a very good job of standing over the ball, so there was no need to do that." According to the official play-by-play, there were six different instances when the Lions had players leave the game with injuries. Each player returned to the game.

Lions | Starters could see time in all four preseason games

Sat, 22 Aug 2009 07:04:30 -0700

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said he may play his starters in all four preseason games in order to keep them game-ready for the start of the regular season. Schwartz said the Tennessee Titans, his former team, used the same approach. "The thought process there was, if they played a half of football in the third preseason game and then had a cup of coffee in the fourth, that was 17 days since they had really any real action when they went for the opener," Schwartz said. "So don't be surprised if you see a little different philosophy than maybe you're used to in the fourth preseason game."

Lions | Stafford could start sooner than later

Mon, 01 Jun 2009 08:06:24 -0700

Peter King, of SI.com, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said there will be strong competition for the starting quarterback job between QB Matthew Stafford and QB Daunte Culpepper this offseason. "The last minicamp in June, we're going to have an arms race,'' Schwartz said. If Stafford shows he is the best quarterback, he could start as early as Week 1. Schwartz has been impressed with Stafford's delivery thus far. "We've got two criteria for when Matthew will play,'' said Schwartz. "One is he'll play when he's ready. The second is when he's the best quarterback for us. But so far, whatever the opposite of buyers' remorse is, that's what we have. We knew he had the terrific NFL arm. But we've found out his release is just textbook classic.''

Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said University of Georgia QB Matthew Stafford's private workout with the team will be critical in their thought process regarding the first overall pick. "But probably (at No.1), just about everything is critical. If he throws great but you're not happy with him mentally and you don't think he can grasp the offense quick enough or whatever it is - boom - that can kick it out. If he's better than you want off-the-field but doesn't throw very well or doesn't take that direction very well ... it's not just the workout that is very criticial, it's literally everything in that profile," Schwartz said.

Tue, 24 Feb 2009 03:58:31 -0800

Sam Farmer, of the Los Angeles Times, reports the Detroit Lions could use the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft on Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry. Head coach Jim Schwartz said he looked at Curry before coming to the NFL Scouting Combine and thinks Curry has the versatility to fit in a lot of places. "He played (on the strong side), but it was interesting at Wake, he played an on-the-ball (strongside) linebacker, which not many people play anymore," Schwartz said. "You have to be really strong to be able to do that. …But they put him out in space, almost like a (defensive) back. The fact that they had trusted him to do both, that spoke a lot about him."
