The Tennessee Titans confirmed Saturday, Oct. 1, that veteran NFL assistant coach Mike Heimerdinger passed away Friday, Sept. 30. He was in Mexico to receive experimental treatments for a rare form of cancer. He was the offensive coordinator for the Titans when he was diagnosed with cancer in November 2010.

Bill Williamson, of the Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos QB Jake Plummer has had a few meetings with assistant head coach Mike Heimerdinger and plans on working with him soon. Heimerdinger, who replaces former offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, will be in charge of the team's passing game and will call the plays during games. "Gary would get on me, but mostly in games," said Plummer. "In practice, I don't act like a fool so I don't think Coach Heimerdinger is going to have a problem with me."

Jeff Legwold, of the Rocky Mountain News, reports the Denver Broncos plan to hire former New York Jets offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger for their coaching staff Monday, Jan. 30. What still is unclear is how head coach Mike Shanahan will distribute the titles surrounding Heimerdinger's hire. The Broncos had no one on the coaching staff ready to take over as offensive line coach. Because of that, either Heimerdinger or offensive line coach Rick Dennison is expected to carry an assistant head coach title, most likely Heimerdinger, while the other will carry the title of offensive coordinator.

Mangini and the Jets were finalizing the deal late Monday, Jan. 16. The Associated Press reported that Jets assistant coaches had been told to report to work Wednesday, Jan. 18, indicating a decision would be made by then. The Star-Ledger reports Offensive New York Jets offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger reacted coolly when told TE Doug Jolley expressed frustration about his role and revealed he had a meeting with Heimerdinger. Jolley was beaten out by TE Chris Baker for the starting job. "If we catch the right coverages, Doug will be in the mix," Heimerdinger said. "I never go into a game saying, 'Don't throw to this guy.'" Asked why the response was a bit terse, Heimerdinger said, "I thought that conversation was between me and Doug."
