Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith said the offense needs to be more versatile, which is why they will incorporate more passing in 2012. "I really think that in the National Football League, when you have to run the football, there's going to be times that it happens in the season, you're going to have to be able to do it," Smith said. "That's why we've got Michael Turner, but it is a spacing game now. And when we say a spacing game, it is about throwing the football and being able to move the ball through the air. You've got to have the weapons, so our identity is we want to be as explosive as we can, both running and throwing the football."

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith knows that playoff success will ultimately define his tenure with the team. In four seasons under Smith, the Falcons are 43-21, but are 0-3 in the postseason. "I think ultimately we are both going to be judged on success in the postseason," Smith said. "There have been a lot of teams and a lot of players that have broken through and gotten that first win. That's why we are doing everything in our power to figure out how to get that done."

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith (heart) underwent more tests Friday, Dec. 16, and it was determined that his heart health is fine. His exact condition is not known. "It will not be anything that affects how I coach the football team," Smith said. "I just want it to come to a conclusion. The testing and such that took place on Friday, we've got a way to deal it and we'll move forward with that."

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith said following the team's preseason finale that he is not concerned with their 0-4 record. "We have a saying that if they play, then it's worth winning. We talk to our guys all the time about that. We want to go out and win ball games. That's why you play them," Smith said. "But at the same time in the preseason, there are certain things at certain points in the preason that you have to look at and you want to get accomplished. That's sometimes overrides some of the other decisions that you would normally make in a ball game. To say am I disappointed, yeah I'm disappointed. To say that I'm concerned. No, I'm not concerned."

Head coach Mike Smith was not sure if Finneran re-injured his rebuilt right knee that kept him out of football for two seasons. Smith said he would know more Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Redskins | Hall involved in scuffle with Falcons players, coaches

Orlando Ledbetter, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Washington Redskins CB DeAngelo Hall was involved in a scuffle Week 9 with several players from the Atlanta Falcons, strength coach Jeff Fish and head coach Mike Smith. Hall said, "I ran over there to kind of pull my guy away. One of their strength and conditioning coaches put his hands on me and started grabbing me. Then it went to various other guys pulling at me and grabbing me." Hall added, "Later on, coach Smith, Mike came over and grabbed me, talking (stuff) to me. Saying he'll kick my (butt) and all this other (stuff)." Hall does not believe that Smith was coming over to break up the fight, and feels something needs to be done about Smith's actions. Hall is planning to call commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss the incident.

"This will give us the opportunity to confirm some of the thoughts we may have on personnel — or it may change our minds. We'll meet and maybe we'll say, 'We have to do some things [in the draft/trades/free-agency] or maybe we really don't because we feel comfortable where our roster is.' As we go through this, what we'll see will spark discussion if we feel we'll need to go in different directions," Smith said.

The Atlanta Falcons will hold a veteran minicamp from Monday, April 14 to Wednesday, April 16. Practices will start at 10:15 a.m. each day. Assistant coaches and players will be available all three days throughout the camp.
