Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder completed 17 of 20 passes (85 percent) on first or second down in the team's Week 1 game. Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave called many short, safe passes, and the Vikings didn't wander too far past the line of scrimmage. Only two of Ponder's attempts traveled longer than 20 yards in the air.

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave endorses the team adding a veteran quarterback into the mix despite the addition of QB Christian Ponder in the NFL Draft. "I think that balances out a position, not just quarterback, but to have some young, developmental talent and also have some veterans - because players not only learn from coaches, they also learn from their fellow players," Musgrave said.

While former Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels was the leading candidate to become the next offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams, a significant snag in negotiations has led the team to broaden its search to include coaches with West Coast-system roots in which QB Sam Bradford excelled during his rookie season, according to sources, reports ESPN's Chris Mortensen. The Rams went through league channels early Tuesday, Jan. 18, to request interviews with coaches including Atlanta Falcons assistant head coach Bill Musgrave and Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. The Rams were denied permission to speak with Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.

Musgrave coached Falcons backup QB Matt Schaub in college and is familiar with Atlanta's running and passing game. Musgrave also has experience working with left-handed quarterbacks, Falcons QB Michael Vick is a lefty, having worked with QB Mark Brunell in Jacksonville and Washington.

Rich Campbell, of Redskins.com, reports Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave intends to employ a passing game that continually puts pressure on opposing defenses as well as a power running game that sustains long drives. Musgrave's vast experience in the West Coast offense is something head coach Joe Gibbs is excited to bring to the team. "He's been a part of a lot of [offenses] that have been real successful," Gibbs said. "He has a real good understanding of offensive football. He comes from the quarterback mindset where he's seen it and played it. So you're bringing in new and different ideas and he has a good history of working with quarterbacks."

Citing the Washington Post, Vito Stellino, of the Florida Times-Union, reports the Washington Redskins paid former Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave $500,000 to be the team's quarterbacks coach. The length of Musgrave's deal was not disclosed.

This year, however, the two have worked together often and Leftwich says they are in synch to the point that Leftwich basically knows the play before Musgrave calls it.

The Dallas Morning News reports former Florida coach Galen Hall reportedly is the leading candidate to become the Dallas Cowboys new offensive coordinator. He coached RB Emmitt Smith in college. Hall had a 41-18 record in six seasons as Florida's coach. He also led the Orlando Thunder of the World League of American Football to a championship, he led the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe to championships in 1998 and 2000 and last season he coached in the XFL with Orlando. Some other potential candidates are former Minnesota offensive coordinator Sherman Lewis, Pittsburgh QBs coach Tom Clements, Philadelphia QBs coach Brad Childress, Carolina offensive coordinator Richard Williamson and former Carolina offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave.
