Rookies, WR Robert Ferguson and DE Jamal Reynolds, along with veteran TE Tyrone Davis saw action last night. Ferguson returned punts and Reynolds saw action in the team's dime defense package. Davis played special teams and was in on the last few plays of the game.

According to Michael Cunningham of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Green Bay Packers TE Tyrone Davis said he still hadn't met his objective of getting his weight down to about 260 pounds. Davis said he wasn't able to work out or run for about six weeks after undergoing surgery in July. He wouldn't say how much he weighs now.

He participated extensively in the team portion of the practice. Davis, who has battled weight issues throughout his career, appeared slimmer. He is on the verge of returning to practice and could return to game action sooner than originally thought. He is currently on the PUP list, but he can be activated at any time. Whether one will be available is another matter. "I want to address it sooner (than later)," Sherman said. Although there aren't any free agent tight ends that interest the Packers, a trade is always a possibility. Sources have indicated the Packers have an interest in Seattle backup Itula Mili. Seattle may not want to trade him. As of now, rookie David Martin is the best bet to replace the injured Tyrone Davis.

The surgery leaves his return to the football field this season in doubt. His agent, Deryle Daniels, confirmed Davis was operated on a little less than a month after injuring the hamstring while running a pass pattern during practice. The Packers will need to add a free agent tight end to its list of needs as the team prepares for the opening of training camp late next week. They currently have four TEs on the roster.

Franks had a rocky rookie season in Green Bay dropping too many passes, missing too many assignments and making too many damaging mistakes. This year he reported to mini-camp still looking sloppy and pushing 280. Coach Mike Sherman was greatly disappointed in the way Davis showed up. TE coach Jeff Jagodzinski has been warning Davis about his weight issue and what in can do to his NFL career. The team would like him to play right around 250 pounds.

The Journal Sentinel reports three injured Green Bay Packers, RBs Dorsey Levens and Rondell Mealey and WR Anthony Lucas, all were able to take part in running drills at the team's mini-camp, but none of the three practiced. All three are recovering from knee injuries. OT Scott Curry (knee), DT Santana Dotson (thigh), DE John Thierry (knee and shoulders) and NT Steve Warren (thigh) all did not practice as well. ORT Earl Dotson took part in a limited practice. Wednesday morning's practice was the team's first on the new FieldTurf surface inside the Don Hutson Center. The new contract signed by TE Tyrone Davis was for one-year, $527,000 and included a $50,000 signing bonus. The contract is believed to include some weight clauses that Davis will have to meet.
