Giants | T. Lewis takes blame for poor defense

Tue, 26 Sep 2006 18:12:36 -0700

The Associated Press reports New York Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis is taking the blame for the team's poor defense so far this season. "I can't screw it up, and right now I am screwing it up. I am trying to do something that they are not doing well," Lewis said. The team is next to last in the NFL in scoring defense and third-down efficiency. The Giants are 30th in first downs allowed and average passing yards allowed and 27th in overall defense. However, the team is only allowing an average of 89.3 rushing yards per game and 2.9 yards per carry. Lewis said the team's problems are not caused by one specific player, scheme or thing. He feels it is a combination of all three and says it is something he experienced as defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers. "Fortunately, we were able to fight our way through some things and get into some playoffs, get into some championship games when it looked fairly bleak early. So I'm not surprised. I'm disappointed that we're not better than we are at this point," added Lewis.

Giants | T. Lewis realizes he should not get too creative

Sun, 30 Jul 2006 09:24:28 -0700

Mike Garafolo, of the Newark Star-Ledger, reports New York Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis realizes he should not get too creative with his pass rushers up front. Lewis said, "I like Trix and Lucky Charms -- the cereals -- and I like them in football, but you have to be really careful. We've got some talent. The worst thing I can do is screw it up." In the time between minicamp and training camp, Lewis studied some of histories greatest defenses in the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, the 1985 Chicago Bears and the 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers. While studying them, Lewis noticed that intelligent coordinators let their players dominate instead of using a lot of gadgets.
