However, GM Terry Bradway stated the team wants to get away form the credit-card approach in working with the cap so they may elect to release some player to open the necessary room. S Nick Ferguson, S Scott Frost and DE Eric Ogbogu, all veterans, appear to be on the bubble for the team at this time.

Fri, 29 Dec 2000 00:26:20 -0800
The New York Times reports New York Jets coach Al Groh said that QB Chad Pennington has plenty of work to do before he seriously challenges Vinny Testaverde for the starting job. He could become the backup if Ray Lucas, who is about to become a restricted free agent, is traded. Because they are set at most positions, the Jets will have the luxury of drafting to increase their depth. But there are still some gaping holes. The team still needs to pick up a big receiver in the off-season. Groh did say that wide receiver is one of the positions the Jets will look at in the off-season. One need the Jets did not address in last season's draft was free safety. Chris Hayes became the starter after Kevin Williams and Scott Frost had failed to hold the spot, but one problem: Hayes is an unrestricted free agent.
