The Florida Times-Union reports former Green Bay Packers S and Florida native LeRoy Butler is interested in joining the Jacksonville Jaguars either as an assistant on the field or in the front office. He has sent a letter to the team expressing his interest. Team spokesman Dan Edwards said new head coach Jack Del Rio is still in the process of putting together his staff, so it is unknown if Butler would fit into his plans.

Todd McMahon reports for the News-Chronicle former Green Bay Packers S LeRoy Butler could return to the team as an assistant coach, if there is an opening and if he decides he wants to. Reached Tuesday at his residence, Butler said he hasn't given much consideration to possibly rejoining the Packers in a coaching capacity next season. Butler sent a resume Tuesday to Jacksonville Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver. While he awaits a response from Weaver, Butler said "another (NFL) team in Florida" extended "a real nice offer" a couple weeks ago for a jack-of-all-trades position. He wouldn't divulge the team.

The News-Chronicle reports Green Bay Packers rookie S Marques Anderson could be thrown into a starter's role right off the bat. He is a candidate to fill the void at free safety until starting S LeRoy Butler and Antuan Edwards are given a clean bill of health. "There's a lot of pressure for me to get in there right away," Anderson said Wednesday. "I have to be on top of my game in case something happens where (Butler and Edwards) aren't ready to go." Butler is expected to miss the first two weeks of training camp as he recovers from a shoulder injury. Edwards is on track to rejoin his teammates at the outset of camp.

Contrary to an earlier report, Butler did not undergo recent surgery on the shoulder. He is rehabbing the injured area five days a week. The Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman indicated S LeRoy Butler (shoulder) is in the Packers' plans for 2002 as long as his shoulder injury heals with no problems. Sherman noted he isn't sure if the team has a player capable of replacing him yet. Butler has been going through rehab in Florida and travels to Green Bay about once a month for tests. Updating an earlier story, the Green Bay Packers would reportedly be interested in free agent LB Jeremiah Trotter (Eagles). The big question is do they have the money to sign him? The Packers had considered trading for Trotter but thought his salary demands, thought to be at least $5 million per year with a sizable signing bonus, were too high. The Packers need to restructure contracts or cut players to find the needed money. S LeRoy Butler and WR Antonio Freeman remain candidates for the above mentioned fates.

Jenkins, who was released four weeks ago by the Denver Broncos, will sign a prorated, one-year deal worth $448,000 with no signing bonus. Butler said he was already planning his comeback for 2002.

Among the free-agent safeties the team may be interested in looking at are Mark Carrier, Billy Jenkins, Marty Carter, Mike Dumas, Henry Jones and Greg Jeffries. The Associated Press reports after Green Bay Packers starting S LeRoy Butler broke his shoulder today, he was replaced by backup S Chris Akins. Akins was benched early in the fourth quarter when he committed a 15-yard personal foul on a drive that led to Atlanta's decisive touchdown. Akins was upset as he was pulled from the game and he got into an animated discussion with coach Mike Sherman on the sidelines. "He was still emotional from the play that just occurred, I'm sure," said Sherman. Sherman said he benched Akins for slamming his helmet. Akins was replaced by rookie S Bhawoh Jue. After the game Akins was contrite for his actions.

NT Gilbert Brown (thigh), S LeRoy Butler (chest) and TE David Martin (toe) also missed practice. All were listed as probable on the report. DB Mike McKenzie was held out of portions of practice with what the team said is a bruised calf but should be fine. DT Steve Warren (thigh) is on the PUP list, but his return for this season remains doubtful.

The Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers have moved CB Bhawoh Jue to free safety as insurance. They are looking at Jue as their potential starter this weekend if normal starter LeRoy Butler (chest) can't play. As previously reported, Butler appears to be 50/50 to play this weekend. On Monday, Butler took some turns with the No. 1 defense in a practice conducted without pads. Jue has the size (6 feet, 197 pounds) to play safety but hasn't played there since his senior year in high school.

Coach Mike Sherman said that Freeman looked sharp during workouts and that he was impressed with his route-running. S LeRoy Butler said he spent time with Freeman this off-season and Freeman is committed to the team. C Frank Winters, scheduled to be a backup this season, told offensive line coach Larry Beightol he wants to still be a starter this season. Currently, Mike Flanagan is slated to be the team's starting center.

As an update to previously reported stories, the Tennessean reports there is a new favorite to land the Tennessee Titans DBs coaching spot to replace Jerry Gray who left for Buffalo. Florida State defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews now appears to be coach Jeff Fisher's choice for the job. He will find out later today if Andrews will accept the job. At Florida State he has coached a numner of NFL players including, including Deion Sanders, Terrell Buckley, LeRoy Butler, Clifton Abraham, Corey Sawyer and Samari Rolle. After this position is hired, Fisher has one more opening on his staff - Ronnie Vinklarek's defensive assistant role.

As an update to an earlier report, the Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers S LeRoy Butler agreed to terms late Thursday with the team on a restructured contract that will give the club salary cap relief and likely keep him as their starting strong safety for two more seasons. The arrangement probably will pay Butler about $4 million in the next two years, including about $1.75 in 2001 and about $2.25 million in 2002. His salary cap for 2001 had been an unmanageable $3.7 million.

The Journal-Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers began working on restructuring the contract of S LeRoy Butler on Tuesday. Negotiator Andrew Brandt and agent Gene Burrough talked on the phone Tuesday to see if they could restructure Butler's contract and arrive at a smaller salary-cap number for 2001. The Packers could be roughly $6 million to $8 million over the 2001 cap of $67.4 million when free agency begins March 2. Butler, who has five years left on his deal, has shown a willingness to restructure his deal, which escalates to $3.7 million in salary cap dollars next season. After the Butler situation is settled, the Packers will set their sights on running back Dorsey Levens, whose $7.4 million salary cap number must be lowered dramatically. WR Antonio Freeman ($4.8 million cap number in 2001), DT Santana Dotson ($4.3 million), ORT Earl Dotson ($3.55 million) and LB Brian Williams ($3.9 million) could be candidates for restructuring as well.

Coach Mike Sherman said Dotson will have an MRI test Tuesday to see if there's further damage. S LeRoy Butler was hit in the head late in the game and S Antuan Edwards had cramps, but both are fine.
