The News Chronicle reports former Green Bay Packers RB Rondell Mealey is eyeing a return to the NFL this season. Mealey recently had tryouts with Detroit, Houston and Tampa Bay, according to agent John Hamilton.

Updating earlier stories, Todd McMahon reports for the News-Chronicle former Green Bay Packers RB Rondell Mealey still is bitter about his earlier release from the Packers. There has been some talk the team may try to re-sign him, will he be able to forgive his former employer and forget the perceived snub it gave him? "He's still reeling from it," Mealey's agent, John Hamilton, said late last week. According to Hamilton, Mealey decided to take the rest of the season off after the Packers waived him September 26. "In all my years of doing this, I've probably never been more shocked by a release," said Hamilton. Mealey has refused to speak publicly about the release.

Packersnews.com reports Green Bay Packers rookie RB Najeh Davenport (eye) will have surgery later Tuesday to repair a broken bone in his eye socket. "Heís going to need surgery," said Mike Harrison, Davenportís agent. "Heís definitely disappointed." The Packers will need to sign another running back, and thereís a strong possibility it will be Rondell Mealey, released earlier by the team.

Pete Dougherty reports for PackersNews.com the recent release of RB Rondell Mealey will cost the Green Bay Packers $58,000 on their salary cap because they converted some of his salary to a signing bonus just before the season started. Paying Mealey the bonus cleared $29,000 in salary-cap room this year, because the Packers also extended his contract through next year.

The Journal-Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers RB Ahman Green (knee/quad) will probably attempt running before Sundayís game but the team doesnít expect him to play. He didnít practice again on Friday. Head coach Mike Sherman feels heís very close to returning and will be ready next week if he canít play this weekend. If Green sits out, RB Rondell Mealey would make his first start but probably split time with Najeh Davenport. Tony Fisher or Maurice Smith will be the teamís No. 3 RB.

The Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman wants someone on his current roster to replace Allen Rossum as the team's punt and kick returner. During the mini-camp that concluded Sunday afternoon, WRs Robert Ferguson, Charles Lee, Javon Walker and Richard Lewis and safeties Darren Sharper, Scott Frost and Jeremy Unertl were among those who fielded punts. RB Rondell Mealey and Lewis returned kickoffs. Ferguson is the leading candidate to return punts, depending if he is a starting a WR. RB Herbert Goodman is the leading candidate to return kickoffs, if he earns a roster spot. RB Dorsey Levens could be the guy, if he is re-signed.

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports for the Sporting News Green Bay Packers RBs Herbert Goodman and Rondell Mealey will probably be competing for the team's backup RB spot behind Ahman Green, if Dorsey Levens leaves. All indications are Levens will refuse to accept another dramatic pay cut and will seek a starting job with another team. Levens is due $2.5 million in salary and the team will have to cut him if he doesn't take a cut.

Clifton did not finish the game and was replaced by Barry Stokes for the final drive. Clifton's status for next Sundayís game won't be known until at least today. DE Vonnie Holliday (strained groin) and backup RB Rondell Mealey (concussion) will be further evaluated today. After Rossum missed his fourth week of practice, he appears to be a good candidate to sit out. Coach Mike Sherman said Rossum will go through a workout before Sundayís game at Tampa Bay and then decide whether to play. If Rossum doesnít play, then backup RB Rondell Mealey will return kickoffs, and WR Antonio Freeman will return punts. The Press Gazette reports Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman might be leaning toward resting backup RB Dorsey Levens on Sunday at Carolina. Levens sustained a badly bruised back in the regular-season opener three weeks ago and he came out of Monday's game worse off. "It might have to take a week off to get rid of it, for it to subside," Sherman said of Levensí injury. "Weíve done about all we can, he gets treatment around the clock." If Levens canít play, No. 3 halfback Rondell Mealey becomes Ahman Greenís backup.

The Journal Sentinel reports even if Green Bay Packers return man Allen Rossum sits out another game this Sunday with a hamstring injury, it is unlikely the team will add another return man. The Packers are considering adding one to the practice squad, which would allow them to prepare somebody in case they decide to make a move. The team is looking at a couple of players, but they are hopeful of getting Rossum back. The Packers were happy with the special teams contributions of WR Antonio Freeman and RB Rondell Mealey Monday night. Freeman returned punts and averaged 7.8 yards on five attempts. Mealey returned kickoffs and had only one return for 12 yards. Mealey added a TD on a fumble return on a kickoff.

The Journal Sentinel reports with the Green Bay Packers top three RBs hurting, Dorsey Levens, Ahman Green and Rondell Mealey, Herbert "Whisper" Goodman will get the start against the Raiders in this week's pre-season finale. His performance will go a long way to determining his future. Last week against the Dolphins, Goodman had trouble getting anything going when he replaced Mealey in the No. 1 offense. He did play well in the second half against the Dolphins second and third string defense. Goodman and De'Mond Parker are fighting for a roster spot.

The Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers CB Tyrone Williams left practice on Monday when he aggravated a groin injury. Williams felt his groin tighten during one-on-one coverage drills and took himself out of practice. He described the problem as minor and said he would play Friday night in Oakland. Earl Dotson returned as the backup right tackle and participated in the entire two-hour practice two days after he had back spasms and was forced to leave the Miami pre-season game. DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila left practice with an ice pack on his right foot after it was stepped on early in practice. The injury is not thought to be serious. Also sitting out were RB Rondell Mealey (ankle), DE Jamal Reynolds (knee) and defensive DT Santana Dotson (thigh).

The Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers were reportedly on the phones Monday attempting to shop one of their extra RBs. Unless the Packers swing a trade before rosters are reduced to 53, they will be forced to cut two or three from the group and get nothing in return. RBs Dorsey Levens and Ahman Green seem to be locked in, but Rondell Mealey, De'Mond Parker and Herbert Goodman were all available for the right price. The Packers could receive an offer for FBs William Henderson or Matt Snider as well. Candidates for acquiring a RB reportedly include the Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers, Washington Redskins, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.

The Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers RB Dorsey Levens is expected to return to practice Monday with a protective splint on his broken left hand. Coach Mike Sherman said he wasn't sure whether Levens would play against Oakland Friday night, but he didn't rule out him being ready for opening day. Starting RB Ahman Green (groin) will also return to practice and is expected to play against the Raiders. The medical staff feared RB Rondell Mealey had a fractured ankle, but tests showed it was only a bruise.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports during the Green Bay Packers scrimmage Saturday night, the team opened up with RBs Ahman Green and Dorsey Levens in the same backfield. Levens then took the rest of the night off. "(Levens) is coming off a couple injuries and I just want to play it safe," coach Mike Sherman said. Green then played the rest of the series with FB William Henderson. RB Rondell Mealey continued his fine training camp with a nice performance during tonight's scrimmage (he rushed six times for 18 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown, and caught one pass for 4 yards). Offensive coordinator Tom Rossley compared Mealey to a young version of Levens.

The Press Gazette reports the Green Bay Packers will hold their annual post-draft mini-camp this weekend. No. 1 draft choice DE Jamal Reynolds will be one of six draft choices in camp, to go along with 13 undrafted first-year players and 12 free agent signings. Those expected to be on hand, but not participate in drills include OT Scott Curry (knee), DT Santana Dotson (thigh), RB Dorsey Levens (knee), WR Anthony Lucas (knee), RB Rondell Mealey (knee) and DT Steve Warren (thigh). Other injured Packers players, including DE John Thierry, will be evaluated Friday morning.
