The News Chronicle reports former Green Bay Packers RB Rondell Mealey is eyeing a return to the NFL this season. Mealey recently had tryouts with Detroit, Houston and Tampa Bay, according to agent John Hamilton.

Updating earlier stories, Todd McMahon reports for the News-Chronicle former Green Bay Packers RB Rondell Mealey still is bitter about his earlier release from the Packers. There has been some talk the team may try to re-sign him, will he be able to forgive his former employer and forget the perceived snub it gave him? "He's still reeling from it," Mealey's agent, John Hamilton, said late last week. According to Hamilton, Mealey decided to take the rest of the season off after the Packers waived him September 26. "In all my years of doing this, I've probably never been more shocked by a release," said Hamilton. Mealey has refused to speak publicly about the release.

Packersnews.com reports Green Bay Packers rookie RB Najeh Davenport (eye) will have surgery later Tuesday to repair a broken bone in his eye socket. "He’s going to need surgery," said Mike Harrison, Davenport’s agent. "He’s definitely disappointed." The Packers will need to sign another running back, and there’s a strong possibility it will be Rondell Mealey, released earlier by the team.

Pete Dougherty reports for PackersNews.com the recent release of RB Rondell Mealey will cost the Green Bay Packers $58,000 on their salary cap because they converted some of his salary to a signing bonus just before the season started. Paying Mealey the bonus cleared $29,000 in salary-cap room this year, because the Packers also extended his contract through next year.

mlive.com reports Detroit Lions coach Marty Mornhinweg is reportedly interested in the possibility of acquiring RB Rondell Mealey. He was just waived by the Green Bay Packers.

The Journal-Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers RB Ahman Green (knee/quad) will probably attempt running before Sunday’s game but the team doesn’t expect him to play. He didn’t practice again on Friday. Head coach Mike Sherman feels he’s very close to returning and will be ready next week if he can’t play this weekend. If Green sits out, RB Rondell Mealey would make his first start but probably split time with Najeh Davenport. Tony Fisher or Maurice Smith will be the team’s No. 3 RB.

The Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers might give backup RBs Ki-Jana Carter and Jason Brookins another chance to unseat RBs Rondell Mealey and rookie Tony Fisher as the primary backups at RB. Carter looked better last week than he did earlier in camp. Brookins is bothered by a toe injury, but also is still in the running for a job.
