Vikings | Ryan Longwell unlikely to handle kickoffs |
Wed, 02 Jun 2010 16:04:20 -0700
Minnesota Vikings PK Ryan Longwell is unlikely to handle kickoff duties for the first time in his 14-year NFL career, reports Judd Zulgad, of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. PK Rhys Lloyd will likely handle kickoff duties next season. Longwel said, "It's odd. As I've told all of you guys it wasn't like I asked to not do it and it's not like I prefer not doing it. It's definitely something that I've never had to deal with before. We kicked off yesterday and I was with the [second] team. It's just something that you've got to kind of take it a day at a time and we have a long ways between now and the final roster and we have a long ways between now and the 45-[man] active roster. So you just kind of let it play out and see how it goes." Longwell said he likes to kickoff in outdoor games in part because it helps him get a better feel for the wind patterns and what the ball might do on a field-goal attempt.

After 10 years you get stuck in a rut and you might as well change it up. So, I changed my off-season workout. He cut back my kicking in training camp a lot. We saw some positive signs in the off-season program. I feel pretty good going into the season," Longwell said.

Packers | Re-signing Longwell the No. 2 priority |
Thu, 16 Feb 2006 05:47:38 -0800
Rob Reischel, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports the Green Bay Packers No. 2 priority this offseason is to re-sign PK Ryan Longwell. The two sides remain far apart, though, and Green Bay is thinking long and hard about placing either the franchise or transition tag on Longwell. Longwell has made 81.6 percent of his kicks over his nine years with Green Bay. The question the Packers have to ask themselves, though, is if they want to pay top money to a kicker if they're in a rebuilding mode, as they appear to be. "There could be a roster massacre, I guess," Longwell said late in the season. "It depends on which way they see it going. I mean, there are schools of thought for both sides I'm sure."

Packers | Paint causes issues on Longwell's missed field goal |
Mon, 26 Dec 2005 08:07:15 -0800
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers holder/P Ryan Flinn blamed wet paint for his hold that caused PK Ryan Longwell to miss his first field goal attempt Sunday, Dec. 25. In a brief snow shower and in otherwise damp conditions, the paint used to mark the yards on Lambeau Field came off on the ball as much as it did on both Packers and Bears jerseys. On Longwell's first field-goal attempt paint had accumulated on one of the ends of the designated k-balls. Flinn received the snap and tried to stop the rotation of the ball, but the paint made the end too slick, and the ball kept rotating as Longwell approached. He then pushed the kick right. Longwell also missed a field goal later in the game.
