Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said C Gerald Laird gives the team the option to rest C Alex Avila (knee) more this season. Avila played a grueling schedule last year that led to a knee injury, and he was forced to play through it in the postseason. Avila said his knee is feeling great after receiving treatment in November. He could serve more time as the designated hitter as a way to take wear and tear off his body.
