Detroit Tigers C Gerald Laird (knee) left the team's Grapefruit League game Friday, March 30, with a left knee sprain after he ran into INF Don Kelly trying to catch a fly ball. He will be re-evaluated Saturday, March 31.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said C Gerald Laird gives the team the option to rest C Alex Avila (knee) more this season. Avila played a grueling schedule last year that led to a knee injury, and he was forced to play through it in the postseason. Avila said his knee is feeling great after receiving treatment in November. He could serve more time as the designated hitter as a way to take wear and tear off his body.

The Detroit Tigers officially signed free-agent C Gerald Laird (Cardinals) to a one-year, $1 million deal Friday, Nov. 18. He will serve as the backup to C Alex Avila.

The Detroit Tigers agreed to a one-year deal with free-agent C Gerald Laird (Cardinals) Thursday, Nov. 17. The deal is still pending a physical. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

St. Louis Cardinals C Gerald Laird went 1-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, a home run and two RBIs Wednesday, Aug. 24, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The homer was his first since Sept. 2, 2010 when he was a member of the Detroit Tigers.
