Braves | Trio of catchers to share playing time

Sat, 25 May 2013 11:27:38 -0700

Atlanta Braves C Gerald Laird will start behind the plate against the New York Mets Sunday, May 26, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. Cs Brian McCann and Evan Gattis will split duties at catcher and designated hitter during the team's upcoming two-game series in Toronto against the Blue Jays beginning Monday, May 27.

Braves | Evan Gattis to play 1B Thursday

Tue, 16 Apr 2013 16:20:47 -0700

Atlanta Braves C Evan Gattis will play first base to remain in the lineup Thursday, April 18, with C Gerald Laird set to catch SP Julio Teheran against the Pittsburgh Pirates. "It's hard to take that bat out of the lineup," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I thought he was fine at first base. The only screw-up was that fly ball and I've seen Gold Glovers miss that play. I'm comfortable to run him out there." Gattis is hitting .324 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in 34 at-bats entering Tuesday, April 16.

Fantasy Tip: For fantasy baseball purposes, this is the time to take advantage of Gattis' hot start, too. Freddie Freeman (oblique) will be back from the DL soon, and when Brian McCann (shoulder) returns, there will be considerably less PT for Gattis. Gonzalez isn't worried, saying he'll rest McCann often, but Gattis may cool off with less consistent at-bats.

Braves | Evan Gattis stays in lineup

Fri, 12 Apr 2013 15:49:36 -0700

Atlanta Braves C Evan Gattis remains in the lineup Friday, April 12, and is starting at first base. Gattis played just seven games at first base at Single-A Rome back in 2011. Manager Fredi Gonzalez wanted to keep C Gerald Laird paired with SP Julio Teheran Friday. Gattis is hitting .391 with three home runs, six RBIs and an .826 slugging percentage in 23 at-bats. 3B Chris D. Johnson moved across the diamond to third base.

Fantasy Tip: Because of his hot hitting to start the year, Atlanta may be forced to go with three catchers to keep Gattis on roster when Brian McCann (shoulder) returns from the infirmary. Gattis will lose decent playing time, however, if that's the case.

Braves | Evan Gattis tearing cover off the ball

Thu, 11 Apr 2013 11:36:52 -0700

Atlanta Braves C Evan Gattis hit his third home run of the season Wednesday, April 10, and he's batting .391 with an .826 slugging percentage in the early going. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he will consider using Gattis at first base Friday, April 12, to get C Gerald Laird in the game. "It's hard to take that bat out of the lineup," the manager said. "Hey, I've got two days to think about it. Probably not, but we'll see. I've done crazier stuff. Make sure you tune in."

Fantasy Tip: Gattis should be added in two-catcher leagues or mixed formats if you aren't getting production from your incumbent. It'll be interesting to see how the catching situation shakes out when Brian McCann (shoulder) returns from the DL - likely in early May. McCann might be rested often upon his return.

Braves | No set catcher rotation

Thu, 04 Apr 2013 18:23:10 -0700

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said the team will not have a set rotation for when Cs Gerald Laird and Evan Gattis will start other than Laird being used when SP Julio Teheran starts. Gonzalez indicated Gattis could be used when SP Tim Hudson starts.

Braves | Evan Gattis continues impressive spring

Fri, 22 Mar 2013 15:02:15 -0700

Atlanta Braves C Evan Gattis hit two home runs Friday, March 22, and is hitting .381 (18-for-46) with five doubles, four home runs and 13 RBIs this spring. He leads the team in slugging percentage (.761) and OPS (1.169). He worked on taking some of the weight off his back leg and closer to the center of his body this week. Gattis is now expected to make the roster with C Brian McCann (shoulder) starting on the disabled list. He may end up starting more than once or twice a week as he splits time with C Gerald Laird.

Fantasy Tip: Gattis deserves a look in NL only leagues now that he's likely to make the team, especially if you own McCann.

Braves | Christian Bethancourt receiving praise

Wed, 20 Feb 2013 14:44:43 -0800

Atlanta Braves C Christian Bethancourt is receiving praise from the coaching staff this spring for his improved hitting approach. Bethancourt could receive consideration to open the season as C Brian McCann's (shoulder) backup with the likes of C Gerald Laird, Evan Gattis, Matt Pagnozzi and Jose Yepez. Bethancourt hit .224 (13-for-58) with three doubles, no home runs and a .246 on-base percentage in the Dominican Winter League. "That swing has gotten better," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "That's always been the thing. When you listen to the reports and listen to the guys talk about it, they always talk about the swing, how the swing is not ready yet. But just watching BP and watching the four at-bats I saw of him in winter ball, I think there's improvement there."

Braves | Brian McCann unlikely for opening day

Thu, 07 Feb 2013 13:17:59 -0800

Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann (shoulder) isn't ready to play with three days until pitchers and catchers report to spring training, and he won't be until his surgically repaired right shoulder is healed from offseason surgery. He hasn't had any setbacks but won't be ready to return until "some point in April." "I'm not close" to being ready, McCann said. "Just started hitting off a tee. I started throwing last week, from 45 feet. Sixty feet this week. I've thrown a total of six times. Next week hopefully at 90 feet, and just go from there. I've got to build my arm strength back up." McCann said his shoulder is feeling good, though. He will become a free agent next winter, and the team will suspend contract talks until then. C Gerald Laird will be the primary backstop until McCann is fully healthy. Doctors will not clear McCann to play in games until April 15, but he'll get at-bats in minor league games before then.

Fantasy Tip: This was expected after McCann underwent surgery on his shoulder last year and the damage was more extensive than initially believed. His price will likely drop a tad but McCann, if healthy, still provides top-tier power at his position. Laird should only be considered in two-catcher formats or deep NL-only leagues.

Braves | Gerald Laird to be backup

Fri, 16 Nov 2012 12:40:06 -0800

Atlanta Braves C Gerald Laird will serve as the backup to C Brian McCann (shoulder) next season. However, with McCann expected to miss at least the first couple of weeks of the season, Laird will serve as the primary catcher for much of the season's first month.
