San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates said he doesn't want to play as many snaps in 2015 as he did last year. "With injuries and whatnot, I played a little bit more than they expected me to play last season," Gates said. "I was playing the whole game. How I feel next year, it depends on how much volume they have me doing. I'd like to come in on third-and-7s, red zones, those situations. That's what my contribution is at anyway."
Fantasy Tip: Gates was a pleasant surprise with 12 touchdowns in 2014, which was the second-most of his eventual Hall of Fame career. It sounds like this is the year he takes a step back that people were expecting last year. Ladarius Green's time to shine could be upon us, but Philip Rivers is very reliant on Gates. View Gates as a mid-to-low TE1, with Green closing in on him as a high TE2.

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates and S Darrell Stuckey have outside chances to be added to the 2015 Pro Bowl roster.
Tue, 13 Jan 2015 11:46:55 -0800
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates put up a very strong year in 2014 despite being written off as being too old just several seasons earlier. "I don't even understand," offensive coordinator Frank Reich said last month. "I don't understand how there's no physical drop-off in his game. None. I mean, I never saw him when he was 25, but what he does off the line of scrimmage, how crafty he is and the physical skill to execute how smoothly he runs -- maybe he slowed down, but I just don't see it. I don't see any dent in the armor." Gates' contract runs through next season, and he plans to honor it. Gates passed Lance Alworth for the most receiving yards in franchise history this year, and he also became just the fourth tight end in history to move past 10,000 career receiving yards.
Fantasy Tip: After what Gates did this year, it's hard to imagine that he won't be drafted in fantasy leagues as a legitimate TE1, considering how volatile the position became in 2014.
Fri, 24 Oct 2014 05:45:02 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates became the franchise's all-time leader in receiving yards, passing WR Lance Alworth, at 9,585 yards Thursday, Oct. 23.
Fantasy Tip: Gates has been sensational at age 34. His two TDs in Week 8 tied him with Julius Thomas for the league lead with nine. The Chargers travel to Miami in Week 9 before their Week 10 bye. Check Gates' price tag on FantasyScore and look to add him to your lineup.
Thu, 02 Oct 2014 09:14:25 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates torched the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2 when they underestimated him, and New York Jets LB David Harris said they won't make that same mistake. "He is a guy that, you have to somebody underneath, and over the top, at all times," Harris said. Gates had three total touchdowns on seven catches and 96 yards against Seattle.
Fantasy Tip: Since Gates' big Week 2 performance, he's had just four catches for 38 yards in the last two weeks. The Jets have been friendly to tight ends this year, though, so even if they game plan for Gates, he could pay off at FantasyScore for a price of $5,800 (11.6% of cap).
Sun, 28 Sep 2014 11:53:18 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is active for the team's Week 4 game.

Sat, 27 Sep 2014 18:00:07 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Ladarius Green (hamstring) has been targeted seven times this season, and five of those targets came in Week 3. Meanwhile, TE Antonio Gates saw just one target in Week 3 after being targeted a combined 17 times in the team's first two games.
Fantasy Tip: After Gates lit up the Seahawks for three scores in Week 2, the Bills responded by paying extra attention to the veteran in Week 3. If opposing defenses continue to focus on Gates, Green could continue to be the main beneficiary. A hamstring injury could force Green to miss San Diego's Week 4 matchup against Jacksonville, but when healthy, he could provide more production than Gates for a cheaper price at FantasyScore.
Thu, 25 Sep 2014 14:21:27 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) practiced in full Wednesday, Sept. 24.

Sun, 21 Sep 2014 18:39:54 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) was able to play in Week 3 against the Buffalo Bills, but he was limited to just one reception for eight yards.
Fantasy Tip: Gates was a huge disappointment for fantasy owners after his huge start in the first two games. Don't fret despite the off game. He should rebound nicely against the leaky Jacksonville Jaguars pass defense in Week 4.
Sat, 20 Sep 2014 15:17:48 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is probable for Week 3.
Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,600; 13.2% of your cap) is a decent play on FantasyScore this week. There is a lot of rain in the forecast in Buffalo Sunday, Sept. 21. This bodes well for Gates because the offense will likely run the ball a lot and use short-to-intermediate passing routes. Gates could be targeted heavily in the poor weather.
Thu, 18 Sep 2014 14:34:51 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) was limited in practice Thursday, Sept. 18.
Fantasy Tip: It's a good sign for Gates after not practicing Wednesday. He should be able to suit up in Week 3 against the Buffalo Bills. It'll be tough to top his Week 2 production, but Gates ($6,600) still makes for a solid FantasyScore option as one of Philip Rivers' favorite targets.
Wed, 17 Sep 2014 12:56:44 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Sept. 17.

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 12, and is probable for the team's Week 2 game.

Thu, 11 Sep 2014 11:48:29 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is not participating in position drills Thursday, Sept. 11.
Fantasy Tip: Gates was able to play with the injury last week and has a chance to play Week 2 despite missing some practice time. Gates will be facing the Seattle Seahawks defense if he plays, which could hurt his value. Owners could consider using another tight end if they have a better matchup.
Wed, 10 Sep 2014 14:37:37 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) was limited in practice Wednesday, Sept. 10.
Fantasy Tip: Gates was questionable heading into Week 1 but wound up playing and leading the team with six catches (10 targets) for 81 yards in a loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He could be questionable again this week against the Seattle Seahawks. Because of the matchup, you may want to avoid him entirely at FantasyScore ($4,100; 8.2% of cap) despite the decent cost.
Wed, 10 Sep 2014 12:04:26 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is not participating in practice Wednesday, Sept. 10.
Fantasy Tip: Gates was able to play Week 1, so he may be receiving an additional day of rest before returning to practice. Gates will be facing a solid Seattle Seahawks defense, which could limit his value. He costs $4,100 at FantasyScore, but owners should consider spending a little more money for a better option at the position.
Mon, 08 Sep 2014 22:57:10 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates had a game-high six receptions with a team-high 81 yards in the Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals, while fellow TE Ladarius Green managed just two grabs for 24 yards.
Fantasy Tip: Gates was considered a game-time decision leading up to the game, and people have tried writing him off, but he is still clearly productive. FantasyScore owners should still pay him mind in Week 2, and he could be had at a pretty nice price compared to the other top players at the position.

He will carry an estimated salary-cap charge of $8.262 million in 2015 and leave the Chargers on the hook for $2.362 million in dead money, should they choose to release Gates. Cutting him will save the team $5.9 million against their 2015 cap. Gates will be 35 years old entering the 2015 season, and the Chargers reportedly want to increase TE Ladarius Green's role in 2014.

Fri, 20 Dec 2013 14:04:53 -0800
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (non-injury) was limited in practice Friday, Dec. 20, but is probable for Week 16.
Fantasy Tip: Gates was likely just being rested heading into the weekend. He will play but is a weak starting option against an Oakland Raiders squad that has limited the damage that tight ends have done this season.

San Diego Chargers WR Keenan Allen has continued to grow, and he is starting to impressive his veteran teammates. "I knew he was good, but I've never seen this," TE Antonio Gates said Friday, Nov. 1. "I didn't think it would evolve this fast. He is making plays in the game, and I'm like, 'Wow.'"
Fantasy Tip: Allen struggled during the early going, but really started to get going in Week 5. He has three or more catches and 67 or more yards in each of his past four games, including two performances with at least 100 yards. He has emerged as a solid WR2/3 or flex fantasy option in most leagues.
Mon, 16 Sep 2013 12:33:11 -0700
San Diego Chargers WR Malcom Floyd (neck) likely will not play Week 3 after being carted off the field during the team's Week 2 game because of a neck injury.
Fantasy Tip: Eddie Royal and Antonio Gates likely will get a bump in their fantasy value while Floyd is out of the lineup. Royal has started off the season very well and should be in all starting lineup as one of the receivers or a flex option. Gates should also be considered at starting tight end in most weeks or could also be flex option.

Fri, 02 Aug 2013 18:05:26 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (foot) was given his first day off of training camp Friday, Aug. 2.
Fantasy Tip: The good news is that Gates isn't dealing with any type of injury. Gates, who has managed seven or more touchdown receptions in nine straight seasons, remains a fine low-end TE1 in all fantasy formats despite his age (33) and recent injury woes. Just be sure to have alternates at the ready as the season goes on.
Wed, 12 Jun 2013 17:03:15 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates, who turns 33 next week, has looked quick and fit in workouts this offseason. He's been using his height advantage against defenders in non-pads work.

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (undisclosed) managed just four grabs for 31 yards in the Week 16 game against the Carolina Panthers, but he was able to post his first touchdown since Week 10. He left the game briefly due to an undisclosed injury, but missed just one play. The touchdown was his 81st career score, tying him with Hall of Fame WR Lance Alworth for the all-time franchise lead.
Fantasy Tip: Gates has 57 or fewer yards in each of his past eight games dating back to his season-high 81 yards in Week 6. He can no longer be considered an absolute must-start in fantasy leagues, although he remains a Top 15 option at his position heading into Week 16.
Tue, 11 Dec 2012 15:03:36 -0800
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates had only three catches for 31 yards in the team's Week 14 win, and he has been held to under 50 yards since Week 9. Gates has had four or fewer receptions in 10 of his 12 games this year. Gates was targeted eight times in Week 14, but he dropped a deep pass and wasn't able to gain separation from Pittsburgh Steelers LB Lawrence Timmons over the middle. The extra burst that Gates used to leave single coverage in the past appears to be gone. He's being double-teamed at times this year, too.
Sun, 09 Dec 2012 19:39:09 -0800
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates was held to three catches for 31 yards in Week 14 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Fantasy Tip: Gates has 49 or fewer receiving yards in each of his past four games, and he hasn't scored a touchdown during the span dating back to Week 10. He remains a Top 10 fantasy play at his position, but he is hurting his fantasy owners when they need him most.
Sun, 02 Dec 2012 21:31:31 -0800
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates did have six catches in Week 13 against the Cincinnati Bengals, but he managed just 49 yards.

Mon, 26 Nov 2012 19:06:15 -0800
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates has been keyed on by opposing defenses, according to head coach Norv Turner. "I think that if you're getting ready to play us and look at our guys and ask, 'Who's the guy we have to make sure doesn't get the ball?' Your answer is Antonio Gates first, of all our guys. And that's what defenses are doing," Turner said Monday, Nov. 26. "There have been times when there were chances to get him the ball and we didn't maybe because of protection or because we threw it to someone else. But there's no question that he gets a lot of attention."
Sun, 18 Nov 2012 21:55:19 -0800
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates had two receptions for just 17 yards and no scores in Week 11 against the Denver Broncos.
Fantasy Tip: Gates had his meager two-game touchdown scoring streak snapped. He now has 57 or fewer receiving yards in each of his past four games. However, he is still a must-start fantasy option until further notice.
Sat, 17 Nov 2012 19:42:50 -0800
San Diego Chargers WR Malcom Floyd has taken over as the team's "Z" receiver. The "Z" typically lines up on the same side as TE Antonio Gates, and Floyd was moved there in Week 10 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to create mismatches and make opponents pick their poison. The position was previously manned by WR Robert Meachem. "With Antonio and I lining up next to each other, we put a strain on whatever side we're on," Floyd said.
Sun, 11 Nov 2012 19:55:26 -0800
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates had four receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown in the Week 10 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He now has 80 career touchdowns, one behind Hall of Famer Lance Alworth for the franchise's all-time record.
Sun, 28 Oct 2012 14:05:56 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates was held to just two receptions and 14 yards in Week 8 against the Cleveland Browns.
Fantasy Tip: The weather was a major factor, limiting the Chargers offense to short stuff through the air and plenty of running. Still, Gates probably should have factored in a little more. He'll try to bounce back in Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs in a favorable matchup at home.
Fri, 26 Oct 2012 14:51:52 -0700
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates said he still deals with the rib injury that he suffered Week 1 from time to time.
