Chargers | Antonio Gates likely to miss Week 4

Mon, 26 Sep 2016 10:50:27 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) "wasn't close" to playing in Week 3 versus the Indianapolis Colts and is likely to miss Week 4 against the New Orleans Saints, according to Michael Gehlken of The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter Henry played all 59 snaps versus the Colts and fared well outside of a late fourth-quarter fumble that squashed any chance of a rally, finishing with five catches for 76 yards. It appears the rookie could be in for another busy day at the office in a plus-matchup at home versus New Orleans next week.

Chargers | Antonio Gates not playing

Sun, 25 Sep 2016 13:15:30 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) has been declared inactive for Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter Henry will start at tight end and should have a solid role in the passing game in Week 3. He could be a decent option in daily fantasy leagues and can be a flex option in deeper leagues.

Chargers | Asante Cleveland promoted

Sat, 24 Sep 2016 11:21:58 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Asante Cleveland was signed off the practice squad Saturday, Sept. 24, further signaling that Antonio Gates (hamstring) will likely not play in Week 3 versus the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter Henry will get the start barring a miraculous recovery by Gates and should receive the bulk of the snaps in a plus-matchup, but the rookie is still going to be hard to trust as a streaming option until we see just how comfortable Philip Rivers is with him.

Chargers | Antonio Gates doubtful for Week 3

Fri, 23 Sep 2016 11:59:19 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) has yet to practice this week and has been all but ruled out for Week 3 versus the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: ESPN reported earlier Friday that Gates has been told he will need two to three weeks to recover, so owners should prepare for a multi-week absence from the veteran tight end. Rookie Hunter Henry will draw his first start as a result, but he's a weak streaming option even in a favorable matchup this week.

Chargers | Antonio Gates not on the field

Thu, 22 Sep 2016 11:23:31 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is not participating in practice Thursday, Sept. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Gates' availability for Week 3 is uncertain at this point, so owners will need to keep an eye on the situation over the next few days. He would have a decent matchup if he plays, but owners may want to use other options in their lineup.

Chargers | Antonio Gates uncertain for Week 3

Wed, 21 Sep 2016 22:39:37 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is uncertain for Week 3 against the Indianapolis Colts, as he is battling a hamstring injury. If Gates is limited or inactive, TE Hunter Henry would likely see more involvement in the offense with TE Sean McGrath in a backup role.

Fantasy Tip: Gates is a strong fantasy play if he is declared healthy to play, as the Colts secondary is dinged up and susceptible to big play through the air.

Chargers | Antonio Gates does not practice

Wed, 21 Sep 2016 17:18:26 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if Gates is in danger of missing Week 3. He has caught six passes for only 35 yards in the first two games but should be a focal point of the passing game with Keenan Allen and Danny Woodhead out for the season. He should still be a solid starting option in most fantasy leagues.

Chargers | Antonio Gates to see more action in Week 2

Sat, 17 Sep 2016 11:34:22 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates is expected to be much more involved in Week 2 versus the Jacksonville Jaguars than he was in the opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to ESPN's Eric Williams.

Fantasy Tip: The Chiefs like to use safety Eric Berry in shadow coverage versus tight ends, so Gates was a poor bet to light it up in Week 1. However, he has feasted recently against defenses that play a lot of Cover 3 - such as the Seattle Seahawks and Jaguars - posting a 4-53-2 line versus Jacksonville last year. Although the Jaguars are better on defense this year, Gates will be counted on to do more this week and beyond with Keenan Allen out for the year. The future Canton-bound tight end should be considered a must-start.

Chargers | Two Chargers close to history

Thu, 11 Aug 2016 14:11:35 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and TE Antonio Gates are nine touchdowns away from surpassing San Francisco 49ers QB Steve Young and WR Jerry Rice for touchdown connections. They would then only trail former Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning and WR Marvin Harrison for most touchdowns between a quarterback and pass-catcher in a career.

Fantasy Tip: You can bet Rivers and Gates know what's at stake this season, and one would think they will try to pass the legendary 49er duo this season. The tight end's best seasons are probably behind him, but he still has gas left in the tank. Draft Gates as a borderline TE1 and Rivers as a mid- to low-end QB1.

Chargers | Hunter Henry headed for big workload?

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 18:44:38 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Hunter Henry's blocking ability will allow him to contribute right away before replacing TE Antonio Gates as the primary pass-catching tight end down the road, and beat writer Michael Gehlken believes Henry could see more snaps this season than Gates.

Fantasy Tip: Henry is a must-own player in dynasty formats, and if Gates suffers an injury, he will be worth picking up in all formats.

Chargers | Antonio Gates terms

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 09:18:54 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates agreed to a two-year, $12 million deal to return to the Chargers Wednesday, March 9. He'll likely finish his career with the Chargers.

Fantasy Tip: Gates is up there in age heading into his 14th NFL season, but he remains productive and continues to be one of Philip Rivers' favorite weapons. He had only 56 catches for 630 yards and five touchdowns in 2015, but he can serve as an effective fantasy backup.

Chargers | Antonio Gates agrees with Bolts

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 08:48:56 -0800

San Diego Chargers impending free-agent TE Antonio Gates agreed to terms with the Chargers Wednesday, March 9, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Gates and Philip Rivers have immense chemistry playing together, and Gates remains a solid TE2 option despite his advanced age.

Chargers | Antonio Gates talks to open next week

Sat, 20 Feb 2016 16:37:48 -0800

San Diego Chargers impending free-agent TE Antonio Gates will begin contract talks with the team at the NFL Scouting Combine next week.

Fantasy Tip: Gates is expected to re-up with the Bolts. He'll be a low-end TE1 option in fantasy.

Chargers | Unlikely to use franchise tag

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 09:24:19 -0800

The San Diego Chargers don't really have a player worthy of the franchise tag this year. FS Eric Weddle will be allowed to hit the free-agent market. TE Antonio Gates turns 36 this summer and is near the end of his career. TE Ladarius Green could be coveted on the free-agent market, but he's been injured and is too inconsistent.

Chargers | Tight ends to be issue for Chargers?

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 11:46:30 -0800

San Diego Chargers TEs Antonio Gates, Ladarius Green, David B. Johnson and John Phillips will all become free agents if they are not re-signed by March 9. Gates is expected to return, however.

Fantasy Tip: Re-signing Gates will be a big plus for the Chargers, and he'll remain in TE1 territory if/when he is re-signed. The depth behind him will be a problem if San Diego can't re-sign at least one of Green, Johnson or Phillips.

Chargers | Antonio Gates likely to return

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 22:36:53 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates is likely to return in 2016. Gates, who will turn 36 in June, has given no indications he's ready to retire.

Fantasy Tip: Gates had a 46-630-4 season while missing four games to suspension and one to injury. He's still a midrange TE1 option in fantasy.

Chargers | Antonio Gates finds end zone

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 22:19:06 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates posted three receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown in the Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos. He was targeted five times.

Fantasy Tip: It was a trying season for Gates, who started out with a four-game suspension and then deal with a few nagging injuries. He wrapped up his year with 56 catches, 630 yards and five scores, so he can still be very productive for fantasy owners.

Chargers | Antonio Gates totals 88 yards

Sun, 20 Dec 2015 20:23:51 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates posted six receptions for 88 yards in the Week 15 game against the Miami Dolphins. He was targeted nine times.

Fantasy Tip: Gates is finishing up strong, posting six receptions in each of his past three games and he has a total of 164 yards over the past two outings. Since he hasn't found the end zone since Nov. 29, he is considered a low-end TE1 in most fantasy formats, but he remains Top 10 at his position.

Chargers | Antonio Gates may extend career

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 10:38:29 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates said he will take some time this offseason to decide on his playing future but indicated that he is leaning toward playing in 2016. "I don't want to go out this kind of way," Gates said. "I don't want to go out as a loser. Winning is the way, ideally, you want to go out. … I want to make one more run at it, and then if it doesn't work, be like, 'OK.' That's just my feeling right now."

Fantasy Tip: Gates has missed some games this season but is still one of the better tight ends in the NFL. He has caught at least six passes in three of the last five games and has four touchdowns on the season. He will have a tough Week 15 matchup against the Miami Dolphins but could still be a starting option for owners.

Chargers | Antonio Gates leads team in receiving

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 21:07:20 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates posted six receptions for a team-high 76 yards in the Week 14 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He was targeted eight times.

Fantasy Tip: Gates is one of the few NFL-caliber receiver options left for Philip Rivers. He remains a decent low-end TE in fantasy play, and might be the only San Diego player worth using at this point.

Chargers | Antonio Gates draws tough matchup

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 21:23:31 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates faces the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 14, and Gates finished with one catch for six yards against the Chiefs in Week 11.

Fantasy Tip: Kansas City has been tough on tight ends in general, and the Chiefs should be able to focus on shutting down Gates ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) once again with the Chargers missing multiple starters in the receiving corps. Spend your money elsewhere at FantasyScore.

Chargers | Antonio Gates scores twice

Sun, 29 Nov 2015 18:00:20 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates finished with four catches for 53 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-25 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 12.

Fantasy Tip: Gates has topped 50 yards in five of his six games this year, and while injuries remain a concern, he is one of the better tight end options at FantasyScore when he does suit up.

Chargers | Probable status for three Chargers

Fri, 27 Nov 2015 13:53:24 -0800

San Diego Chargers TEs Antonio Gates (hip) and Ladarius Green (ankle) and WR Malcom Floyd (shoulder) are listed as probable for Week 12 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear how involved Floyd ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) will be in his first game back from a torn labrum, so it might be safe to steer clear of him this week. Gates ($6,800, 13.6%) and Green ($2,900, 5.8%) have a good matchup, but Green's value is minimal with Gates playing.

Chargers | Antonio Gates has full practice

Thu, 26 Nov 2015 13:38:00 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hip) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Nov. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Barring a setback, Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) should be active for the Week 12 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He grabbed 18 catches and found the end zone twice through his first two games of the season, but since, Gates has just 11 receptions for 131 yards without a score through three games. Even with a plus-matchup, Gates is pricey at FantasyScore, but he checks out as a mid- to low-end starting tight end in seasonal formats.

Chargers | Antonio Gates, Malcom Floyd limited

Wed, 25 Nov 2015 15:48:11 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hip) and WR Malcom Floyd (shoulder) were limited in practice Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Fantasy Tip: The Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chargers' Week 12 opponent, have been fairly accommodating to tight ends this year, but not as much to wide receivers. Floyd ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) may not even play as he is still recovering from a torn labrum. Gates ($6,800, 13.6%), however, is a solid option if he plays.

Chargers | San Diego TEs do nothing in loss

Sun, 22 Nov 2015 18:58:52 -0800

San Diego Chargers TEs Ladarius Green and Antonio Gates were each limited to just one catch in Week 11 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fantasy Tip: Green and Gates were huge disappointments for fantasy owners, especially since more targets were expected with the wide receiver corps decimated. It's becoming clear that basically no one in the San Diego roster can be trusted for fantasy purposes right now.

Chargers | Antonio Gates, Ladarius Green active

Sun, 22 Nov 2015 11:47:38 -0800

San Diego Chargers TEs Antonio Gates (knee, hip) and Ladarius Green (ankle) are active Sunday, Nov. 22, against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) is still the better play here despite both players being active. It's unclear how involved Green ($2,900, 5.8%) will be coming off his injury and with Gates also playing. Take a wait-and-see approach with Green.

Chargers | Antonio Gates has owned Kansas City

Fri, 20 Nov 2015 19:27:51 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates faces the Kansas City Chiefs at home in Week 11, and he has caught at least one touchdown in five straight home games against the Chiefs.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) is dealing with some injuries, but if he does suit up, history says he will find the end zone.

Chargers | Both Chargers TEs return to practice

Fri, 20 Nov 2015 11:44:26 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee, hip) and TE Ladarius Green (ankle) returned to practice Friday, Nov. 20. It was Green's first practice since Nov. 1. Gates is probable for Week 11, while Green is questionable.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) is probably the best option Philip Rivers has left to throw to at this point. He's a better play than Green ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) against the Kansas City Chiefs on FantasyScore.

Chargers | No practice for Antonio Gates

Thu, 19 Nov 2015 15:50:00 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee, hip) did not practice Thursday, Nov. 19.

Fantasy Tip: This is not a promising sign as Gates ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) had a limited practice yesterday. Now he's apparently dealing with a hip issue, too. His status should be monitored this weekend. If he or Ladarius Green ($2,900, 5.8%) isn't able to play, John Phillips ($1,700, 3.4%) could be a sneaky sleeper on FantasyScore.

Chargers | Antonio Gates not 100%

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 16:30:49 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) said he's still not up to full speed after spraining his knee 30 days ago. He has looked much less mobile than before the injury, and Gates said it feels as though he's running in mud. He has 10 catches on 16 targets for 125 yards in two games since his injury. Gates is unsure when he'll be back to full speed, as he's never dealt with a medial collateral ligament injury in his career.

Fantasy Tip: A less-than-100% Gates ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) isn't ideal to run with on FantasyScore this weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs. Much of Gates' game relies on his ability to gain separation from linebackers in the middle of the field.

Chargers | Antonio Gates limited

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 13:49:50 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) was limited in practice Wednesday, Nov. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) should still be able to play, and, assuming he does, he'll see more than his fair share of targets, too, with Keenan Allen and Malcom Floyd sidelined. His FantasyScore price is high for tight ends, but he's worth it.

Chargers | Antonio Gates targeted 11 times

Mon, 09 Nov 2015 21:19:49 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) was gimpy in the Week 9 game against the Chicago Blackhawks Monday, Nov. 9. He finished with six grabs for 69 yards while being targeted 11 times.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) was certainly not 100 percent and can use the team's upcoming bye more than anyone.

Chargers | Antonio Gates probable

Sat, 07 Nov 2015 11:55:54 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) is considered probable for Week 9 versus the Chicago Bears.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) should be the primary tight end for San Diego against the Bears with Ladarius Green doubtful. Keenan Allen also wont play, so Gates will see his fair share of targets Monday night. Hes a great option at tight end on FantasyScore.

Chargers | Antonio Gates limited

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 13:11:26 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) was limited during practice Friday, Nov. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) was able to play last week and appears to be on track to play against the Chicago Bears Monday, Nov. 9. Gates could still be limited by the injury but could be a solid starting option in most leagues.

Chargers | Antonio Gates limited Thursday

Thu, 05 Nov 2015 14:35:09 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) was limited in practice Thursday, Nov. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) played limited snaps last week and finished with just four catches (five targets) for 56 yards. He should see more time in Week 9 against the Chicago Bears if he doesn't have any setbacks in practice. Gates will be more worth the FantasyScore price, especially since it looks as though Ladarius Green will sit out.

Chargers | Antonio Gates at practice

Wed, 04 Nov 2015 11:19:46 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) is practicing Wednesday, Nov. 4. Gates sat out a number of snaps last week due to a sprained knee.

Fantasy Tip: It's great news that Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) is practicing this early in the week. The Chicago Bears have limited tight ends the last three weeks, but could return to double-digit targets with Keenan Allen (kidney) out. He's a decent TE1 on FantasyScore.

Chargers | Antonio Gates may be limited

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 09:06:42 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) may be limited during the Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens because his medial collateral ligament injury likely will affect his movement. He was able to jog and do some footwork drills during pregame warmups but was not seen cutting sharply on his left leg.

Fantasy Tip: Gates' ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) playing time likely will be determined by how he feels during the game, which makes him a risky option for owners. Fantasy owners may want to consider using healthier options since it is not known how Gates will be used during the game.

Chargers | Antonio Gates active for Week 8

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 08:33:41 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) is officially active for the Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known how many snaps Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) will receive in the game but has a chance to be involved in the passing game. Gates is a risky option since he has not been on the field in two weeks, and owners may want to consider using a healthier option in their lineup.

Chargers | Antonio Gates expects to play

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 07:29:59 -0800

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) expects to play in the Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will still need to check the inactive list to see if Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) will play because nothing is official at this point. Gates could be limited by the injury if he is active, so he will be a risky option for owners in all leagues.

Chargers | Antonio Gates could play

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 07:11:52 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) will participate in pregame warmups before the Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens and still has a chance to play, according to a source. Gates is listed as questionable for the game.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to check the inactive list to see if Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) will be active for the game. Gates has not practiced at all the past two weeks and probably would be limited if he plays against the Ravens. Owners may want to consider other options even if Gates is able to play.

Chargers | Antonio Gates listed as questionable

Fri, 30 Oct 2015 10:48:53 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) is listed as questionable for Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens, but he hasn't practiced in the last two weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) is questionable, but it feels like he's more doubtful after not having practiced since he suffered the injury two weeks ago. Avoid him in all fantasy formats. Ladarius Green ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) once again will see a big boost in his fantasy value and is a fine value selection on FantasyScore if you're looking to save a little loot at the position.

Chargers | Antonio Gates out again

Thu, 29 Oct 2015 15:22:36 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) missed practice for the second straight day Thursday, Oct. 29.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) hasn't had any tests done on his knee as of yet and is going off how he feels. With no practice so far this week, though, it seems unlikely that he'd play in Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens. Ladarius Green ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) would once again start at tight end, but he faces an unfriendly matchup.

Chargers | Antonio Gates not practicing

Wed, 28 Oct 2015 12:06:45 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) is not practicing Wednesday, Oct. 28, and hasn't practiced at all since spraining the medial collateral ligament in his knee against the Green Bay Packers in Week 6.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) will need to practice in some fashion if he's to return in Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens. As of now, consider him a pretty risky daily player. Ladarius Green ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) will start at tight end again if Gates sits out his second straight game. The Ravens are tough against the tight end position, so it may be smartest to avoid both Gates and Green this week.

Chargers | Antonio Gates could miss multiple weeks

Tue, 27 Oct 2015 15:03:47 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) has foregone an MRI exam on the left medial collateral ligament sprain in his knee, and he's listening to his body on when he might be able to return to the field. His injury could keep him out several weeks, and he could undergo an MRI exam this week if he doesn't see any progress. "I'm playing it by ear," Gates said. "I'll see how it feels on Wednesday, Thursday. If I still can't go, then I'm going to try to look at it to see what the root of the problem is, what really is going on. Right now, it's a feel thing. I know my body. (The athletic trainers) trust me to make the right choice."

Fantasy Tip: Because of Gates' ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) and lack of experience with knee injuries, this ailment could easily keep him sidelined for another week or two. Grab Ladarius Green if he's available in your league and you're hurting at tight end. The Baltimore Ravens, the Chargers' Week 8 opponent, are actually strong against tight ends, so look to avoid Gates regardless this weekend.

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) said he hopes to participate in practice at some point this week after missing the last game because of a medial collateral ligament injury. Gates said he worked out Saturday, Oct. 24, but said his knee did not feel right.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see if Gates will be able to play in Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens. Gates would be a risky option if he is active because of the injury but should be considered by owners.

Chargers | Antonio Gates ruled out

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) has been declared inactive for the Week 7 game against the Oakland Raiders.

Fantasy Tip: Ladarius Green ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) should be the starting tight end for the team with Gates out of the lineup. Green played well when he filled in for Gates earlier in the season and should be a solid starting option in most leagues.

Chargers | Antonio Gates should return soon

Sun, 25 Oct 2015 07:38:16 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (ankle) is considered a game-time decision for the Week 7 game against the Oakland Raiders but would be expected to play in the Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens if he is ruled out for the game against the Raiders.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to check the inactive list to see if Gates ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) will dress for the game. The injury could affect him if he is active for the game, which makes him a risky option. Owners may want to consider other options because of Gates' uncertain status.
