Chargers | Antonio Gates not playing

Sun, 25 Sep 2016 13:15:30 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) has been declared inactive for Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter Henry will start at tight end and should have a solid role in the passing game in Week 3. He could be a decent option in daily fantasy leagues and can be a flex option in deeper leagues.

Chargers | Asante Cleveland promoted

Sat, 24 Sep 2016 11:21:58 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Asante Cleveland was signed off the practice squad Saturday, Sept. 24, further signaling that Antonio Gates (hamstring) will likely not play in Week 3 versus the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter Henry will get the start barring a miraculous recovery by Gates and should receive the bulk of the snaps in a plus-matchup, but the rookie is still going to be hard to trust as a streaming option until we see just how comfortable Philip Rivers is with him.

Chargers | Antonio Gates doubtful for Week 3

Fri, 23 Sep 2016 11:59:19 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) has yet to practice this week and has been all but ruled out for Week 3 versus the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: ESPN reported earlier Friday that Gates has been told he will need two to three weeks to recover, so owners should prepare for a multi-week absence from the veteran tight end. Rookie Hunter Henry will draw his first start as a result, but he's a weak streaming option even in a favorable matchup this week.

Chargers | Antonio Gates not on the field

Thu, 22 Sep 2016 11:23:31 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is not participating in practice Thursday, Sept. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Gates' availability for Week 3 is uncertain at this point, so owners will need to keep an eye on the situation over the next few days. He would have a decent matchup if he plays, but owners may want to use other options in their lineup.

Chargers | Antonio Gates uncertain for Week 3

Wed, 21 Sep 2016 22:39:37 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is uncertain for Week 3 against the Indianapolis Colts, as he is battling a hamstring injury. If Gates is limited or inactive, TE Hunter Henry would likely see more involvement in the offense with TE Sean McGrath in a backup role.

Fantasy Tip: Gates is a strong fantasy play if he is declared healthy to play, as the Colts secondary is dinged up and susceptible to big play through the air.

Chargers | Antonio Gates does not practice

Wed, 21 Sep 2016 17:18:26 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if Gates is in danger of missing Week 3. He has caught six passes for only 35 yards in the first two games but should be a focal point of the passing game with Keenan Allen and Danny Woodhead out for the season. He should still be a solid starting option in most fantasy leagues.

Chargers | Antonio Gates to see more action in Week 2

Sat, 17 Sep 2016 11:34:22 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates is expected to be much more involved in Week 2 versus the Jacksonville Jaguars than he was in the opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to ESPN's Eric Williams.

Fantasy Tip: The Chiefs like to use safety Eric Berry in shadow coverage versus tight ends, so Gates was a poor bet to light it up in Week 1. However, he has feasted recently against defenses that play a lot of Cover 3 - such as the Seattle Seahawks and Jaguars - posting a 4-53-2 line versus Jacksonville last year. Although the Jaguars are better on defense this year, Gates will be counted on to do more this week and beyond with Keenan Allen out for the year. The future Canton-bound tight end should be considered a must-start.

Chargers | Two Chargers close to history

Thu, 11 Aug 2016 14:11:35 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and TE Antonio Gates are nine touchdowns away from surpassing San Francisco 49ers QB Steve Young and WR Jerry Rice for touchdown connections. They would then only trail former Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning and WR Marvin Harrison for most touchdowns between a quarterback and pass-catcher in a career.

Fantasy Tip: You can bet Rivers and Gates know what's at stake this season, and one would think they will try to pass the legendary 49er duo this season. The tight end's best seasons are probably behind him, but he still has gas left in the tank. Draft Gates as a borderline TE1 and Rivers as a mid- to low-end QB1.

Chargers | Hunter Henry headed for big workload?

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 18:44:38 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Hunter Henry's blocking ability will allow him to contribute right away before replacing TE Antonio Gates as the primary pass-catching tight end down the road, and beat writer Michael Gehlken believes Henry could see more snaps this season than Gates.

Fantasy Tip: Henry is a must-own player in dynasty formats, and if Gates suffers an injury, he will be worth picking up in all formats.
