Chargers | Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates nearing history

Tue, 17 Oct 2017 20:55:55 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers' next touchdown pass to TE Antonio Gates will be their 86th as a pair, breaking their tie with former San Francisco 49ers greats and Hall-of-Famers Steve Young and Jerry Rice for second-place on the all-time list.

Fantasy Tip: Obviously, Rivers is the only one of the two worth playing in fantasy these days, as Gates has been seeing fewer snaps and running fewer routes than Hunter Henry in recent weeks. If Week 1 was any indication, their chances of passing Young and Rice aren't very good as Denver held Gates to 17 scoreless yards.

Chargers | Two catches for Antonio Gates

Sun, 24 Sep 2017 18:30:52 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers TE Antonio Gates posted two receptions for 30 yards on five targets in the Week 3 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fantasy Tip: Gates didn't do much, but at least he wasn't blanked like Hunter Henry. The veteran Gates shouldn't be relied upon as a regular fantasy contributor at this point of his career, but it appears Henry isn't quite ready to take the torch just yet.

Chargers | Antonio Gates sets record

Sun, 17 Sep 2017 18:14:07 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers TE Antonio Gates caught two passes for 11 yards and a touchdown in a 19-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 2, setting the NFL record for most touchdown receptions by a tight end with 112.

Fantasy Tip: Gates has just four catches for 28 yards in the first two games. He could continue to be a presence in red zone, but he doesn't see enough targets to make a consistent impact. He can be left on the waiver wire.

Chargers | Cardale Jones impressing Antonio Gates

Los Angeles Chargers QB Cardale Jones has "special ability," according to tight end Antonio Gates. "The ceiling is unlimited for him," Gates said.

Chargers | Bolts TEs did not lack for work inside 20

Tue, 11 Jul 2017 19:22:38 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers TEs Antonio Gates (18) and Hunter Henry (16) ranked second and in a tie for third, respectively, in the league among tight ends in red zone targets. Both Gates and Henry were tied for second among all tight ends with seven targets inside the 10.

Fantasy Tip: While owners should not look for a repeat of these high-target numbers from either player given how many quality options the Chargers have at receiver now, Philip Rivers has long enjoyed throwing to his tight ends. However, Henry is in danger of being over-drafted this summer given his likely unsustainable touchdown rate of 4.5 (eight scores on 36 catches). Owners should view him more as a high-upside TE2 who will miss out on some red zone production because of Gates.

Chargers | Hunter Henry set to become 'main' tight end

Tue, 30 May 2017 09:16:18 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers TE Hunter Henry is expected to move into the role of team's main tight end, while veteran TE Antonio Gates will transition into more of a third-down, red zone role, according to ESPN's Eric D Williams.

Fantasy Tip: The Chargers basically said as much back in December, so this should not come as a surprise. Although this changing of the guard should mean Henry ascends quickly into high-end TE1 territory, the Chargers may have too many weapons for their own good to allow that to happen. As a result, Henry may only be in line for a slight increase over last year's 36 receptions, 478 yards and eight touchdowns, leaving him on the lower end of the TE1 pool.

Chargers | Hunter Henry to be featured TE in 2017

Sat, 31 Dec 2016 15:29:07 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Hunter Henry will be the team's featured tight end next season regardless of whether or not Antonio Gates returns for a 15th season.

Fantasy Tip: Jaded owners of Henry could be asking why this passing of the torch didn't take place on or before Week 16, when the rookie wasn't even targeted in a loss to the Cleveland Browns. With that said, Henry is able to create separation and clearly looked like the better player the few times both were healthy. Expect the 2016 second-round pick to be a solid midrange TE1 in 2017.

Chargers | Antonio Gates might play in 2017

Wed, 28 Dec 2016 22:42:59 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates indicated Wednesday, Dec. 28, that he might play one more season in 2017. "This is not the way I expected to be done. I'm definitely leaning toward coming back," Gates said.

Fantasy Tip: Gates current has his lowest yardage total (493) since his rookie season of 2003 while finding the end zone six times. He has at least four touchdowns in each of his past 13 season, and would be a low-end TE1 in deeper fantasy leagues in 2017.

Chargers | Antonio Gates finishing up strong

Sat, 24 Dec 2016 14:13:53 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates posted game highs with eight receptions and 94 yards on 13 targets in the Week 16 game against the Cleveland Browns. He also scored a touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: Gates' catch total and yardage total, as well as his targets, were all season highs. It's uncertain how much longer he will play, but this is an outstanding performance for fantasy owners who trusted him with the favorable matchup.

Chargers | Antonio Gates has decent outing

Sun, 11 Dec 2016 14:58:48 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates caught five passes for 61 yards against the Carolina Panthers in Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Gates has been targeted at least nine times in five of his last seven games but has at least 50 yards in only three of those games. He can be considered a low-end No. 1 tight end against the Raiders next week.
