Rivera is coming off his second back surgery in two years and there is a possibility that he could retire. Talking about Rivera's future with the team, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, "He will decide what his future is going to be. I don't need to go into his pluses. We are all aware of the issues of his back. [Signing Colombo] allows us the flexibility to be pretty patient with Rivera."

Mosley asked if he had any restrictions and Rivera replied, "None whatsoever. If camp started tomorrow, I'd be out there. However, team doctors are not expected to rush Rivera back, so the rehab could be extended. Rivera recently underwent microdiscectomy surgery on his back, a procedure that typically takes eight weeks to heal. He has already begun running on a treadmill.

"That was my first thought," said Rivera. "I don't want to be a guy who signs with a team, collects a check and sits on the sideline. If I'm going to be there, I want to help win championships, or I'm out." Rivera eventually changed his mind after talking with team personnel.
