Harris will likely assume the role in the team's offense formerly played by RB Shawn Bryson (knee), who will miss the rest of the season after being placed on injured reserve.

With RBs Kevin Jones and Arlen Harris holding down the Lions' top running back positions; the addition of rookie RB Brian Calhoun may have sealed the end of his stay in Detroit for Pinner. "My whole thing, since college, is that I've never had the chance to come in and be `that guy.' Nothing has ever been given to me so I've always had to work," Pinner said. "I'm looking forward to working and making plays for this team and making this team." Pinner has raised his game in training camp, so far. Pinner dropped 10 pounds to increase his speed and agility and he has looked good in training camp. As the No. 4 back in the rotation, he doesn't get a lot of practice repetitions, but he's sparkled when he's had the chance. If the Lions do cut Pinner, it won't be until late in the preseason. He is great insurance in case another back is injured before the regular season.

Early in training camp, coach Mike Martz set out the parameters for Harris and Cason. "One's not going to eliminate the other if they're both playing good," Martz said at the time. "Now, if one's playing really good and the other one's not, yeah, you eliminate the other guy. But if they're (both) playing good, we're going to keep them somehow, some way." Cason realizes he has to make something happen in the Rams' final two exhibition games, beginning Monday evening, Aug. 29, in Detroit.

Although Harris and Cason remain good friends, both understand the sense of urgency needed to claim what could come down to an either/or situation as opposed to keeping both as St. Louis did last year. The possibility remains that both Harris and Cason could make the Rams' final 53-man roster, but as it stands both are competing for one job and both are approaching it as such. "I'm competing, he's competing," Cason said. "So may the best guy win."

He had bulked up in 2004 to prepare for a transition from running back to fullback. That experiment is over and Harris is now back at running back. Harris is battling RB Aveion Cason for the No. 3 running back slot on the team's depth chart. Head coach Mike Martz has noticed. "I'm excited about Arlen. You can see a marked difference in speed," Martz said.
