Updating previous reports, Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley can earn an extra $5 million in his new deal if he is not on the disabled list for more than 15 days due to a knee injury. Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley's two-year, $27 million extension gives him the chance to max out at five years and $75 million, according to major league sources. He has three vesting options that will each be worth $15 million, on top of the two guaranteed years. Each of the options will vest at 500 plate appearances, a number that he hasn't reached since 2009. He'll get $15 million guaranteed next year and $10 million in 2015. If Utley fails to reach 500 plate appearances in any of those years, his option will revert to a conditional team option, and the value of those options will range from $5 million to $11 million.

Chicago Cubs C Dioner Navarro (ankle) left the game Wednesday, Aug. 7, against the Philadelphia Phillies after a home-plate collision with 2B Chase Utley resulted in a right leg injury. Navarro had X-rays, and the tests were negative. He is being treated for a contusion.
Fantasy Tip: The injury looked worse than it apparently has turned out to be, as Navarro was originally carted off and on the telecast they feared a possible break. Look for Welington Castillo to get the starting nod Thursday in the series finale.

The Philadelphia Phillies want to keep 2B Chase Utley as a "Phillie for life," according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., and they're very close to doing just that. The team is close to a two-year extension with multiple vesting options, according to major league sources. The total guaranteed money for the deal would be in the "high 20s", as in millions, according to one source. His extension would be for the 2014 and 2015 seasons, and possibly beyond if he remains healthy, the source said.
Fantasy Tip: This is a great deal for Utley, as Citizens Bank Park is a fantastic home stadium for his type of power. The big question is, can he stay healthy? He still has plenty left in the tank, but his propensity for injury has become a major concern for fantasy owners.
