Dodgers | Chase Utley suspension update

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 14:45:38 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Chase Utley is expected to have an opportunity to appeal his two-game suspension during spring training. However, no date has been set for the appeal hearing, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Given the uncertainty of Utley's role entering the 2016 season, and his underwhelming production in 2015, there isn't a lot to like about the veteran's fantasy stock. He returned an unhelpful .212/.286/.343 slash line through 423 plate appearances last season, after all. It would be wise to leave Utley to cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues this spring, and even in those deep formats, he is nothing more than a low-end option.

Dodgers | Platoon at 2B likely for Dodgers

Tue, 26 Jan 2016 13:58:49 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers 2Bs Chase Utley and Enrique Hernandez are likely to platoon at second base in 2016, with Hernandez mainly starting against left-handers, who he hit .423/.471/.744 against last season. Hernandez played second, shortstop, third base and all three outfield positions last year, so he can also spell other players around the diamond.

Fantasy Tip: While Utley will have the strong side of the platoon at the keystone, Hernandez is the much more attractive fantasy option in deep mixed and NL-only leagues for roster depth. Where Hernandez lacks for playing time at second base, he should be able to make that up elsewhere spelling other starters at other positions, and you can't argue against his positional versatility.

Dodgers | Suspension still looms over Chase Utley

Mon, 25 Jan 2016 12:28:14 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Chase Utley is still facing a potential two-game suspension to start the 2016 season, as his appeal of his two-game ban for his late slide into New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada (fibula) in the National League Division Series has not yet been heard.

Fantasy Tip: Utley is essentially a fantasy afterthought in the majority of formats at this stage of his career. Full-time at-bats likely aren't in the equation, and he returned a .212/.286/.343 slash line through 423 plate appearances last season. Leave him to the waiver wire outside of NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Dodgers | Howie Kendrick not likely to return

Wed, 30 Dec 2015 20:25:23 -0800

Free-agent 2B Howie Kendrick (Dodgers) is unlikely to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers. General manager Farhan Zaidi said Wednesday, Dec. 30, that "the way things are right now, we feel we're pretty set at second base with (2B Chase Utley) and (2B/OF Enrique Hernandez)."

Fantasy Tip: Kendrick might get a look from an NL West rival of the Dodgers, as the Arizona Diamondbacks have put out feelers.

Dodgers | Chase Utley to play every day?

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 15:15:03 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Chase Utley could be the Dodgers' everyday second baseman next year despite hitting a career-low .212 last year with a career-worst .629 OPS. Utley was signed to a $7 million deal for the 2016 season, and the Dodgers suggested he could play second, third and first base. Utley could seize the everyday keystone job since Los Angeles doesn't have any other obvious candidates at the position. The in-house candidates are 2B Jose Peraza and OF Enrique Hernandez, and the Dodgers might want to keep Hernandez in a utility role.

Fantasy Tip: Utley isn't ruling it out, but let's be realistic. He's nearing the end of his career and the Dodgers will want to keep him as healthy as possible. That probably means some type of utility role while switching off with Peraza and/or Hernandez at the keystone. Utley's production has fallen off a cliff. While it might not be as bad as last year, he won't be applying for a roster spot in shallow mixed leagues anytime soon.

Dodgers | Chase Utley returning to Dodgers

Sun, 06 Dec 2015 12:04:53 -0800

Free-agent 2B Chase Utley (Dodgers) agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday, Dec. 6. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Utley may have a chance to compete for starting second base job, so his value may depend on his performance during spring training. Utley should be an option in NL-only leagues and could also have value in deeper mixed leagues if he wins the job.

MLB | Multiple teams pursuing Chase Utley

Thu, 19 Nov 2015 17:49:53 -0800

Updating a previous report, the Los Angeles Dodgers are one of five or six teams that have expressed interest in free-agent 2B Chase Utley (Dodgers), according to agent Joel Wolfe.

Fantasy Tip: Wolfe claims that most of the interested teams plan to use him as an everyday infielder, although it is uncertain if he would be used primarily at one position or at multiple positions. Utley, who will turn 37 before the start of next season, hit just .212 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs in 107 regular-season games and isn't worthy of being drafted outside of single-universe leagues at this point.

Dodgers | LA interested in re-signing Chase Utley

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 10:02:17 -0800

The Los Angeles Dodgers are interested in re-signing 2B Chase Utley to be a left-handed hitting option at second and third base. OF Enrique Hernandez and 2B Jose Peraza are the leading options at second base if 2B Howie Kendrick leaves in free agency.

Fantasy Tip: At age 37 next year, Utley will never be an everyday player again, but he can be useful for a team in certain matchups as a guy off the bench. He hit just .202 with three home runs in 34 games for the Dodgers last year. Only single-universe managers should have any interest in Utley next year.

Dodgers | Chase Utley not retiring

Tue, 27 Oct 2015 16:24:21 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Chase Utley has no plans to retire, according to his agent, Joel Wolfe. Utley could be suspended two games next season for sliding into New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada in the playoffs and breaking his leg. The Dodgers will decline Utley's $15 million option for the 2016 season, though, making him a free agent. Utley turns 37 in December and hit only .212 for the Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies this year.

Fantasy Tip: The Dodgers are unlikely to re-sign Utley as they look to transition to a younger ball club with a smaller payroll. Utley has fallen on hard times at the plate and won't drastically improve at his age, making him a bench player for whichever team he signs with. He shouldn't be drafted in shallow mixed leagues in 2016.

Dodgers | Chase Utley's appeal to be heard Monday

Wed, 14 Oct 2015 09:00:09 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Chase Utley's appeal of a two-game suspension will be heard Monday, Oct. 19, which will take place after the National League Division Series against the New York Mets. Utley is eligible to play in the series against the Mets as he awaits an appeal. He did not play in Games 3 or 4.

Fantasy Tip: Utley ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) has been serving more of a bench role with Howie Kendrick back in the lineup and playing everyday mostly. As a result, Utley is a weak FantasyScore option and hasn't done much offensively since being traded to the Dodgers this summer.
