Phillies | Chase Utley to miss first week

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 09:54:47 -0800

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley (ankle, knees) isn't expected to play in the first week of Grapefruit League games because of a sprained right ankle, but Utley isn't too worried about the injury. Utley rolled the ankle in January, and it remains swollen. "I'm making a little progress," Utley said. "Obviously I wish it was a little quicker, but I'm trying to be smart about it. It seems like it's making some progressions every few days. I'd like to get out there as soon as possible." General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Utley wouldn't play "for a little while."

Fantasy Tip: Injuries have hampered Utley now the last few seasons, and the risk of more injuries is high because of his age. However, he can give you a decent mix of speed and power once the bigger names come off the board at the keystone. Keep an eye on how his ankles and knees treat him once he's playing spring games.

Phillies | Chase Utley won't play ST opener

Sun, 01 Mar 2015 18:13:46 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley (ankle, knee) will be rested in the Grapefruit League opener Tuesday, March 3, against the New York Yankees. The team said his knees are fine, and they're just being cautious. Plus, he is still recovering from a sprained right ankle suffered in mid-January.

Fantasy Tip: Utley has been dinged up over the past few seasons, but he still has some pop and will be a nice FantasyScore play this season for power at a position that doesn't usually have much.

Phillies | More rest for Chase Utley in 2015?

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 14:28:10 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley is likely to receive more days off this season, according to manager Ryne Sandberg. "It's important to have bench players that'll be able to step in and give those guys possibly more of a rest than normal," Sandberg said. "But that's really up to the player and how he's going. He had an All-Star first half of the season. Still a quality at-bat even if he made outs. But yeah, I see Chase getting some more days off this year."

Fantasy Tip: Utley's 589 at-bats last season were the most he has had since the 2009 season, and at 36, there is little upside. Still, he is a reliable source of batting average, runs and RBIs, and he he has the potential to flirt with 20 home runs and 10 stolen bases. It isn't flashy, but respectable five-category production is difficult to find at the keystone, especially where Utley can be drafted.
