The Green Bay Packers finalized their coaching staff Friday, Feb. 6 by hiring Scott McCurley (assistant linebackers coach), Jason Simmons (defensive, special teams assistant), John Rushing (defensive quality control coach), Luke Getsy (offensive quality control coach) and Chris Gizzi (strength and conditioning assistant).

The Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers are expected to release LB Chris Gizzi before the start of training camp next week. Agent Peter Schaffer said Gizzi was unable to play because of complications with his back, but wouldn't elaborate. "The surgery for the discectomy was successful," Schaffer said Thursday. "He was not reinjured doing anything. He won't be a Packer this year but we'd like him to be a Packer in the future."

Packersnews.com reports the team will go through next week's mini-camp without five defensive players, safeties LeRoy Butler and Antuan Edwards, LBs Nate Wayne and Chris Gizzi and DE Jamal Reynolds will all miss as they continue to rehab previous injuries. Defensive coordinator Ed Donatell is hopeful all five will be ready when training camp begins in July. Butler appears to be the biggest question mark of the five.

Christopher Walsh reports for PackersNews.com LB Torrance Marshall remains the starter at MLB for the team, at least for now. "I have an idea about Torrance, he’s given us everything he has,” coach Mike Sherman said. “He’s worked extremely hard, he meets (with coaches) daily, not just mini-camps." The Packers are expected to bring in a veteran MLB, even if Marshall continues to impress. Currently, Marshall’s backup would be Chris Gizzi. The Packers will be studying the June 1 releases. They also have the option of waiting for training camp to try and make a trade or pick up a released player. "There isn’t another (middle) linebacker, so right now it’s my spot,” Marshall said.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers LB Nate Wayne (back) and CB/KR Allen Rossum (knee) are OUT for Sunday. DE Jamal Reynolds (knee) practiced Friday, but he may be inactive Sunday. DE John Thierry (knee) and NT Gilbert Brown (toes) are expected back in the starting lineup after missing two games. Thierry will wear a brace on his right knee. LB Rob Holmberg will start for Chris Gizzi who is on IR and gone for the season. Rookie LB Torrance Marshall returns to his backup role.

Updating an earlier story, the AP reports Green Bay Packers LB Chris Gizzi will undergo surgery on a disc in his back. The microsurgical procedure was scheduled Wednesday.

The Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers have not make an announcement on LB Chris Gizzi's (back) condition, but Gizzi told several teammates Monday that the tests he underwent revealed a slipped disc. Gizzi might need surgery immediately to repair the problem and is likely to be sidelined for the season if surgery is necessary.

The Press Gazette reports three players on the Packers injury report, KR Allen Rossum (hamstring), OL Chad Clifton (hamstring) and RB Rondell Mealey (concussion) did not participate in practice on Wednesday. MLB Bernardo Harris missed practice with a sinus infection, and Chris Gizzi filled in for him. Also sitting out practice were DE Vonnie Holliday (groin), Kabeer Gbaja-Biamilia (stinger) and DB Mike McKenzie (hip).

The Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers LB Nate Wayne (knee) does not expect to play Sunday. As a side note, he also plans to appeal the $5,000 fine given to him by the NFL. Chris Gizzi probably will start for Wayne on the weak side. KR Allen Rossum (hamstring) hasn't practiced in three weeks and isn't expected to play. Rookie TE David Martin (shoulder) missed practice Friday and he remains questionable for Sunday.

The Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers LB Chris Gizzi will begin practicing this week as a short-yardage blocking fullback. The team released two of its fullbacks on Sunday, Chris Gall and Matt Snider. The team may also be able to use RB Rondell Mealey at fullback as well. William Henderson remains the starter at the position.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman, during a Friday press meeting, stated CB Tod McBride (knee) won't play this weekend. LB Chris Gizzi (hamstring) did some running on Friday but it's too early to tell on his status for this weekend's game. S Scott McGarrahan (shoulder) practiced on Friday and the team is taking the wait-and-see approach on him right now.

The Green Bay News-Chronicle reports Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman said only LB Chris Gizzi (hamstring) suffered a notable injury Sunday. Gizzi pulled his hamstring, and Sherman said he will list Gizzi as questionable for this week's game against Tampa Bay. Sherman did note WR Bill Schroeder (sprained left ankle) and DT Russell Maryland (nausea) also battled problems Sunday but remained in the game.
