The Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers are expected to release LB Chris Gizzi before the start of training camp next week. Agent Peter Schaffer said Gizzi was unable to play because of complications with his back, but wouldn't elaborate. "The surgery for the discectomy was successful," Schaffer said Thursday. "He was not reinjured doing anything. He won't be a Packer this year but we'd like him to be a Packer in the future."

Packersnews.com reports the team will go through next week's mini-camp without five defensive players, safeties LeRoy Butler and Antuan Edwards, LBs Nate Wayne and Chris Gizzi and DE Jamal Reynolds will all miss as they continue to rehab previous injuries. Defensive coordinator Ed Donatell is hopeful all five will be ready when training camp begins in July. Butler appears to be the biggest question mark of the five.

Christopher Walsh reports for PackersNews.com LB Torrance Marshall remains the starter at MLB for the team, at least for now. "I have an idea about Torrance, he’s given us everything he has,” coach Mike Sherman said. “He’s worked extremely hard, he meets (with coaches) daily, not just mini-camps." The Packers are expected to bring in a veteran MLB, even if Marshall continues to impress. Currently, Marshall’s backup would be Chris Gizzi. The Packers will be studying the June 1 releases. They also have the option of waiting for training camp to try and make a trade or pick up a released player. "There isn’t another (middle) linebacker, so right now it’s my spot,” Marshall said.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers LB Nate Wayne (back) and CB/KR Allen Rossum (knee) are OUT for Sunday. DE Jamal Reynolds (knee) practiced Friday, but he may be inactive Sunday. DE John Thierry (knee) and NT Gilbert Brown (toes) are expected back in the starting lineup after missing two games. Thierry will wear a brace on his right knee. LB Rob Holmberg will start for Chris Gizzi who is on IR and gone for the season. Rookie LB Torrance Marshall returns to his backup role.

Updating an earlier story, the AP reports Green Bay Packers LB Chris Gizzi will undergo surgery on a disc in his back. The microsurgical procedure was scheduled Wednesday.
