Updating previous reports, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Atlanta Falcons FB Bob Christian (concussion) suffered a concussion on Sunday. He was out cold for awhile and had to be taken to Piedmont Hospital for observation. It’s rare for a player to be knocked out one week and play the following, so his status for next week is up in the air. Atlanta doesn’t have a backup fullback, so backup TE Brian Kozlowski replaced him during the game.

Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com the Atlanta Falcons quietly extended the contract of FB Bob Christian. They added two years to his contract, keeping under wraps through the 2005 season. Christian got a $600,000 signing bonus, but he dropped his 2002 base salary from $2 million to $750,000. He can make up the balance in not likely to be earned incentives. The new deal saves Atlanta $1.1 million this season and $1.8 million for the 2003 season, when Christian's base salary drops from the scheduled $3 million to $1 million. In the years added to the contract, Christian will have base salaries of $1.2 million in 2004 and $1.4 million in 2005. He can also earn $500,000 roster bonuses in 2004 and 2005.

The Associated Press reports Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Reeves said he made a mistake taking the ball out of QB Michael Vick's hands for the the team's last play of the game. On fourth-and-goal from the 1-foot line with 53 seconds left in the game, the team tried to run FB Bob Christian up the middle and he was stopped. "I wish I'd have done it. I wish I had done anything to put it into his hands, instead of what we did," Reeves said. The loss eliminated the Falcons from the playoffs.

Charles Odum reports for the Sporting News Atlanta Falcons RB Rodney Thomas is expected to continue to see an extended amount of action over the team's last two games. Starting RB Maurice Smith has been slowed for several weeks by a sprained ankle, and he will need off-season surgery to repair torn cartilage in his knee. Unless FB Bob Christian starts in a one-back set, Smith should be the starting RB again. Thomas' speed also produced quick bursts that allowed him to create extra yards against the Bills last week and the offense needs the threat of the long run.

Smith underwent an MRI earlier this week that showed he has some cartilage damage in his knee and the team isn't sure when he first suffered his knee injury.

The doctors took out part of the bursa sac and sewed it back up with eight stitches. ORT Ephraim Salaam (sprained ankle) doesn't believe he'll be able to practice before Thursday.

Charles Odom writes in the Ledger-Enquirer that all the news for the Falcons was not bad today as RBs Bob Christian and Bryon Hanspard were at practice today. Both are attempting to comeback from knee injuries suffered in 1998. Christian says he expects to be ready to participate in the July 28 opening of training camp. Hanspard showed good quickness and speed Monday but said he has not yet been cleared for training camp. The team used RB Ken Oxendine with the first team offense today for 11-on-11 drills.
