Following the trade of SS Marco Scutaro to the Colorado Rockies, the Boston Red Sox are expected to use INFs Mike Aviles and Nick Punto in a platoon situation at shortstop. The team currently does not feel SS Jose Iglesias is ready to make the major league roster but he could make the team if Aviles and Punto struggle defensively.

The Boston Red Sox signed free-agent INF Nick Punto (Cardinals) to a two-year, $3 million deal Wednesday, Dec. 14. Roster bonuses could bring the total from $1.5 million to $1.75 million each year.

The Atlanta Braves are interested in free-agent SSs Nick Punto (Cardinals) and Ronny Cedeno (Pirates) as backup shortstops. The team is not serious about free-agent SSs Jack Wilson (Braves) or Edgar Renteria (Reds).

Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he would be interested in the team signing free-agent 3B Nick Punto (Cardinals) this offseason. Punto played for the Twins and was a part of their division championships in 2006, 2009 and 2010.

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jon Jay is being benched for Game 5 of the World Series Monday, Oct. 24, with 2B Skip Schumaker starting in center field and batting eighth. Manager Tony La Russa said he is also considering moving SS Rafael Furcal to ninth in the lineup and replacing him with 3B Nick Punto.
