Boston Red Sox INF Nick Punto has made a mechanical adjustment at the plate, with the help of hitting coach Dave Magadan, that has allowed him to see the ball better and reach base more often. After hitting only .182 with two walks and seven strikeouts during the month of April, Punto walked in three consecutive plate appearances against the Oakland Athletics Tuesday, May 1, raising his on-base percentage from .269 to .333. "To put (the change) in easy terms, I think I had too much of a forward lean," he said. "So I just stood up a little taller."

Boston Red Sox 3B Kevin Youkilis (back) was scratched from the lineup for the second straight day Monday, April 30, with a stiff back. INF Nick Punto replaces Youkilis at third and is batting ninth in the order.

Boston Red Sox SS Mike Aviles (ankle) is out of the lineup Tuesday, April 10, while dealing with a slight sprained left ankle. INF Nick Punto is replacing him at shortstop. Manager Bobby Valentine said Aviles is fine.

Boston Red Sox INF Nick Punto hit leadoff and recorded three hits Sunday, April 8. Punto won't be a regular at leadoff this year, though, as he was subbing for 3B Kevin Youkilis.

Boston Red Sox 3B Nick Punto, OF Jacoby Ellsbury, 2B Dustin Pedroia, 1B Adrian Gonzalez, DH David Ortiz and SS Mike Aviles each had two or more hits in the extra-innings loss Sunday, April 8, against the Detroit Tigers. Aviles and Punto each ended up with three RBIs, while Aviles, Gonzalez and Ortiz each scored two runs apiece.

Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine sees INF Mike Aviles as an everyday shortstop, and INF Nick Punto is tabbed for more of a utility role. The starting shortstop job appears to be Aviles' to lose. SS Jose Iglesias is expected to push Aviles for playing time.

Following the trade of SS Marco Scutaro to the Colorado Rockies, the Boston Red Sox are expected to use INFs Mike Aviles and Nick Punto in a platoon situation at shortstop. The team currently does not feel SS Jose Iglesias is ready to make the major league roster but he could make the team if Aviles and Punto struggle defensively.

The Boston Red Sox signed free-agent INF Nick Punto (Cardinals) to a two-year, $3 million deal Wednesday, Dec. 14. Roster bonuses could bring the total from $1.5 million to $1.75 million each year.
