Jason LaCanfora, of the Washington Post, reports P Eddie Johnson was released after he could not complete his first practice with the Washington Redskins Tuesday, Aug. 29. Johnson said his leg felt tired after kicking so much. Johnson beat out free agent P Toby Gowin (Jaguars) in the morning workout at Redskins Park, league sources said, but the team could opt to bring Gowin back. Agent Ken Harris said Johnson kicked off and punted well in the morning. Johnson left with a large ice pack around his upper leg. "I understand 100 percent," Harris said. "I have so much respect for (special teams coach) Danny Smith and his decision."

The Pioneer Press reports Minnesota Vikings second-year P Eddie Johnson has regained some of his confidence after a shaky rookie campaign. Scheduled to compete with veteran P Darren Bennett, whom the Vikings signed during the offseason, Johnson punted well during workouts Saturday, May 8. However, Johnson said he's developed a funky hitch in his step and neither he nor the coaching staff knows how he developed the bad habit.

Harris said he spoke to four teams, but he doesn't expect the Vikings to trade him before the NFL Draft. The Vikings have told Harris that Johnson won't be released and will compete with Darren Bennett for the starting job during training camp.

Bill Williamson reports for the Pioneer Press that the Minnesota Vikings plan to bring in a veteran punter to compete with P Eddie Johnson. Head coach Mike Tice said the team could bring back Leo Araguz, who played for the team in the last two games of the season. Tice said Johnson is still being given a shot with the team, but also said that "he has to show that he is willing to do what it takes to perform at the NFL level. He has yet to do that, so we'll bring in a veteran for sure to compete with him."
