Packers head coach Mike Sherman said Johnson was excused from the minicamp. Johnson is likely to be released after June 1 and the teams wants to guarantee he doesn't get injured at a team-sponsored workout.

Updating a previous report, Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports the Green Bay Packers will release DE Joe Johnson. If the Packers wait until after June 1 to release Johnson, the team will be able to push some of his 2004 salary-cap charge into the future and gain $4 million in cap room. If they elect to release him before June 1, the Packers will gain about $700,000 with no future cap hits.
