Eagles | Cortez Signed Because of Kickoff Abilities

Tue, 25 Oct 2005 18:28:11 -0700

Bob Brookover, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports the Philadelphia Eagles have given indications that newly signed PK Jose Cortez will remain with the team even when injured PK David Akers returns to the team. The Eagles made the move because they believe that Cortez has a much stronger leg than PK Todd France, who struggled to get his kickoffs past the 10-yard line. By employing Cortez on kickoffs, the Eagles would make Akers' return from a torn hamstring less strenuous. 12 of Cortez's 34 kickoffs this season have gone into the end zone, and he has had five touchbacks. Nineteen of his kickoffs have been inside the 5-yard line, and all but six have been inside the 10.

Roy Cummings, of the Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers PKs Todd France and Matt Bryant are still struggling. For the second consecutive day Monday, August 1, the team's morning workout was marred by their kickers' failure to connect on field-goal tries during a drill that simulates the final seconds of a half or game. "We had three sudden-change drills today and we made one of three, so I'm not happy with it at all," special teams coach Richard Bisaccia said. "We won't win that way, and they won't win the job that way." Head coach Jon Gruden said that Bryant's and France's performance so far in camp has the Bucs back on the lookout for kicking help.
